iPhones & GPS

I have an Apple iPhone 3G or 3GS (how can I tell which???). I understand the 3GS encodes GPS coordinates into phone calls so the fire dept could find me, for example. Can someone confirm if this is true? Is it true for 3G, also?

Can a 3GS be used as a GPS device? …a 3G? And if so, how? I do not see anything user-friendly as a standard feature. Perhaps, I’d have to install an app? And even if thru an app, I wager this does not prove 100% if outgoing calls carry GPS data in the signal (ny ultimate goal).

Last, yeah, (said sheepishly) I do need to know how I can tell. The “about” feature under settings did not clearly identify which type I have.

A pre-thanks for any/all advice, all!

The Google Maps app acts as a GPS navigation device. It’s good enough that it is all I use. There are loads of third-party apps available if you want something other than Google Maps.

My (limited) understanding is that only 911 calls get GPS coordinates embedded.

The Google Maps feature on the 3GS doesn’t provide spoken directions, which I’d want when I’m in the car alone. I think ATT offers spoken directions as an option (with a monthly charge, as I remember). You can also get the TomTom software in the App Store.
