Ipod Classic: When did it get voice memos?

I have two Sixth Generation Ipod Classics. I just noticed that on one of them (120GB) when I pop in an earphone with a built-in microphone (which came with my Iphone), all of a sudden I get a new option … voice memos … I tried it. It actually works, although the sound quality isn’t fantastic. So suddenly, my Ipod has become an input as well as an output device. Cool. However, my other one (fat 160GB) doesn’t do that. So far as I know, the two pods are considered the same generation, but there seems to be this difference … when did they sneak this feature in?

Hey, my nano does that too!

Now, if they included full manuals with hardware, and software, we’d know these things.

120 gb is 6 gen 1st revision, released September 9, 2008. 160 is either the newer 2nd generation, released exactly one year later, or the first 6th generation (September 5, 2007), which was an option along with a 80 gig version.

I have the 80gb, but unfortunately no microphone to test it. What do you mean by “fat” though? Are some 6th gens thicker?

Yes, the original 160GB 6th Gen was a lot thicker than the other classics.

I’m not sure why it doesn’t work with your 160GB. I had a 30GB iPod in college (it was the iPod Photo when I bought it in late 2004, the first one with a color screen) and it had voice memo capability. I bought a little microphone that plugged into the headphone port and used it all the time.
