My fourth gen ipod isn’t working anymore. When I turn it on, the apple logo comes up, then, the screen goes blank again. Sometimes the logo will fade into a horizontal line before it shuts off again. Awhile ago, it stopped charging, and didn’t work for about a month, but then, the battery started charging again. The battery is fully charged, and it was working fine today, then it froze, got very hot, made a clicking sound, then shut off. When I plug it into the computer, the large battery icon pops up, but the charging indicator doesn’t move.
Any ideas? Sure: send it to the repair center. There are too many issues going on for it to be something that you can fix, IMHO. My first ipod had similar problems and unfortunately the warranty had run out leaving me with the choice of paying for the servicing or buying a new one. I opted for the latter.
Now the indicator is moving, and the do not disconnect icon is being displayed. Itunes doesn’t recognize the player though, and when I stop the ipod, it still says “do not disconnect.” I’m running windows XP.
Thanks. It won’t be going to the repair center, as it’s two years old, and the warranty is long gone. Hopefully it’ll start working for a little while so I can get the songs off of it. Of course, I should have done this a long time ago…
The songs should still be in iTunes, no? You might consider sending the iPod in for battery replacement; it sounds like that’s your problem. They’ll just send you a refurb in return, so even on the off chance that it’s not the battery, it should solve it for you. I think it’s $60.
No, not all of them. There’s more space on the ipod than there is on the computer. So the clicking is a symptom of a dying battery? Sixty bucks isn’t bad if that’s what the problem is.
Ipods are infamous for breaking down. The ipod I wrote about in my previous post was busted for a year, but I still couldn’t bare throwing such an expensive piece of crap ( i felt so at the time. I, now, love ipods again). But I came to terms with myself and decided to throw it out because I had bought a new ipod within that year. Just before I was going to throw it in the trash I decided to check one last time just in case it might have worked… oddly enough it worked like there had never been a problem with it in the first place. 3 days later it broke down again.
I just had one stop working for a week. I was shopping for a new one, although I consider them to be well overpriced. Coming home from work today I found that it was working now, and I don’t have to buy one after all.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. My ipod stopped working for a month, then suddenly started working again, before dying this last time. If replacing the battery doesn’t help, perhaps it’ll do it do it again.
