Ipod software

Is it just me or is iTunes not really all that good?

It really seems to me that the winamp ipod plugin for managing you ipod works better than itunes. What do other people think?

Trying it now…I HATE iTunes. Thanks for the heads up.

I share the disdain for iTunes, and I’ve tried to use the winamp plugin, but it doesn’t seem to work for me. Problems are that:
[ul]
[li]it usually doesn’t seem to detect my iPod when it’s plugged in. It was working fine for a while, but now it’s back to not detecting it. It does, however, detect the iPod while iTunes is running.[/li][li]It won’t allow me to eject my iPod after I have transferred any files using the winamp plugin. In order to eject, I have to close and restart winamp.[/li][li]When it does eject, it forces me to go through the error dialogue saying that there is nothing connected to the drive in question a couple times before it returns to normal winamp.[/li][/ul]
Too bad really, because I would love to have a good alternative to iTunes.

I beleive that the problem is that iPodService.exe is still running. You can see if this is the case by closing it from the windows task manager. I then removed that from restarting from bootup with hijack this.

Not sure about this one. I don’t have this problem.

I have this problem but I live with it so I don’t have all the problems with having to do all my song manipulation through iTunes.

I just grabbed the plugin for winamp. I’ll definitely give it a try.

Horses for courses, I guess. I find WinAmp needlessly fiddly. iTunes does everything I need with no difficulty and has a consistent, accessible interface that I’ve never had a problem with.

Like Crusoe, I’m happy with itunes…The only thing I don’t like about it is that I can’t sample songs before I buy them…at least not very well…it always has to rebuffer.

Go into Preferences, Store tab. At the bottom is an option called “Load complete preview before playing” to solve exactly that problem.

I think iTunes and WinAmp both suck.

iTunes takes forever to load and all the crap that runs in the background uses up far more system resources than I’d like. WinAmp (unless they’ve changed recently) has one of the worst interfaces I’ve ever attempted to use. Which is a shame because I always found it relatively speedy and lightweight.

I wish there was something with the simple iTunes look-and-feel, but with as small a footprint as possible.

Also, I don’t believe it’s possible in either program to simply play one song unless you make a playlist with just that song. I can’t listen to a song without it going onto the next one on the list. That annoys me.

I hate to admit this, but sometimes I just use Windows Media Player. :frowning:

I just tried again, but this time it saw it with iPodService.exe still running. So that doesn’t seem to be the cause.

Still happens. Wish I knew how to fix it.

This is possible with the new version of winamp. I don’t think the interface has been changed much, but I’ve never had a problem with it.

Dr. Love I am not sure I am reading your reply correctly or not but you should NOT have iPodService.exe running. It sounds from your reply that it was running. You need to open up the windows task manager and look for it under the processes tab.

Winamp 5.2 just came out and it has fixed the ejecting problem for me. You might want to take a look at it Dr. Love.

Downloaded it, but it’s now acting even stranger than before. The ejection problem is still there, but it doesn’t display anything in the media library that says iPod or something similar. I know it was detecting it, checking the iPod support options in Winamp confirmed that, and all of my playlists were downloaded to the computer. Interestingly, the eject button was available in the downloaded playlists. Maybe I’ll mess around with it later.

There is in the media library an item called portables. If you click on it the ipod shoud be revealed if it is plugged in.
