These were some questions that came up with a friend tonight over dinner.
What has happened with the Iraqi Ambassador to the UN?
Is Saddam’s Government still recognized by the UN as the government of Iraq? If so, for about how much longer?
How do they ‘cut’ relations with a government?
Could the Ambassador apply for asylum in the US for fear of political prosecution if he goes back to Iraq?
Errrrrmm…. This was suppose to be in General Question. Sorry. :o :smack:
Any kind mods out there willing to move it for me?
Very soon, we are going to see an awkward situation where several countries may continue to recognize the old Hussein regime embassadors in defiance of the American imposed ‘new regime’. If anything, they will do so to make things uncomfortable for the United States.
I don’t think the United States would want to grant him asylum, but perhaps another Arab nation will.
I was thinking about this guy last night as well. Talk about being the guy with the longest straw! He is in the best possible place. I’d rather be him right now than one of the guys in the bunker.
I figure he will get asylum somewhere in the Middle East or Africa. I don’t know if he is accused of any of the war crimes (I doubt he is. It would seem that you would want your ambassador to the world to have clean hands).
Good question on how long the UN/other countries will recognize the Saddam regime. Tough call. I have a feeling most countries will quickly severe ties with the Saddam regime. They may not like the war or the way the US handled it, but despite protests, no one really liked Saddam. When he is gone, and there is no economic benefit or fear of invasion, I think governments will not be as mad as they seemed.
If S.H. is killed, it might make the process more straightforward.
I just heard on BBC Radio that British Intelligence has information that Saddam may have survived the recent attack, which blurs the lines even further.
(Mods, I would still appreciate a movie to GQ if you have a chance)
