Double decker bus ploughed into a bus stop on Wellington Quay just by Temple Bar. 5 dead, people still trapped. Shit, I walk past this every day.
More: two buses collided, pushing one of them up onto the pavement. No passengers on the bus (don’t know if it was reckless driving, but I’ve been meaning to write and complain for a while now about how those buses are driven when they’re heading back to the depot). 10 people seriously injured. Bertie’s gone down there (for electioneering purposes no doubt). Just outside the Clarence Hotel (that’s the one Bono owns). Total chaos in the city centre.
Holy shit  !
Well I was in the city centre last night, and the atmosphere was weird. Cops everywhere. The south quays were shut off, though the traffic was being directed the wrong way up the one-way system away from the crash. 17 people are in hospital, but all are now “stable”. Man, I can’t imagine how horrific that must have been. 22 people just mown down in a second.
I was in Belfast yesterday so I only found out about this well after it happened. Truly shocking. I also walk down that quay regularly.
Any idea yet how it happened (carelessness or mechanical malfunction)?
From the Irish Times
I’m just waiting for one of the Harneyites to try to portray this as another justification for privatising the buses
From America, with love and sorrow…
It’s hard to imagine all right. It’s a sobering thought that you can be just standing or walking on the footpath and killed in an instant.
This kind of thing is why I favor light rail.
My condolences to the Irish Dopers.
Ironically, the bus stop had been moved to this spot from its previous location in order to facilitate the introduction of light rail.
One of the dead was on his phone to his daughter when the bus hit him.
That poor girl, not only losing her father but to hear it…Christ.
The two drivers are to be interviewed ASAP in the hope to find the cause. Medical difficulties for either have been ruled out.
What the hell was a out of service bus doing on the inside of a bus that was loading up with people?
updated BBC story
I’m just impatient to know how it happened! It seems so crazy that one bus could crash into a parked bus and then end up driving through onto the footpath. How could it have happened! Well we’ll have to wait and see. It must have been terrifying for both the victims (especially) and for the drivers.
That was my old bus stop and the one I still use to go to my parent’s house (and my brothers and sisters). It’s true that those bus stops get way too crowded - after all Lucan etc. are very heavily populated now. Thankfully no one in our family was there that day but it still makes you think - there but for the grace of God and all that. My sincere sympathies to those affected.
the stops at the quays were an accident waiting to happen. The amount of bus traffic passing along there is unreal. Very hard to tell exactly what happened until we know what position the parked bus was in.
If you look at the pic in the BBC story I linked to you’ll see the 66(white bus) basically where it was. It was stationary approx 5ft away from the kerb. People where walking from the kerb to the bus when for some reason the special bus(yellow and blue) came behind it turned onto the kerb and went between the 66 and the building taking out the people on the kerb.
Fucking hell, imagine being the driver. How could you live with that on your conscience?
