I bought some!
I haven’t bought food from this particular seller, but they have a near 100% and are from Ohio there are no bad peoples in Ohio.
The only ‘food stuff’ I’ve bought from ebay are herbs that are not sold commonly in stores. And no, it’s not wacky weed. I’ve had good luck so far in all my ebay purchases.
I would think if someone lived in the Middle of Nowhere, ebay and their stores ( or other online sellers) would be a great place to get that one thing they cannot find locally. Cheaper than driving to Hell and Gone and no impulse purchasing.
Food Ireland. com for the Irish doper who can’t get the owl on the packaging oatmeal in England. ( I am so farking lazy)
I bit the bullet and bought a pound of steel cut oatmeal from the ebay seller in Ohio last night.
I’ve already received notice that it is on its way.
This is a good sign, IMHO.
And the plus of it is is that I was at the store today and searched for McCann’s Irish Oatmeal and found that the Ebay Guy’s stuff was a little bit cheaper.
I will keep you all posted on every mundane detail of my life and receiving oatmeal in the mail as the mundania warrants.
I received my oatmeal today in the mail!
It’s getting the slow cooker tonight for its offical test run.
wish me luck.
but are you figuring in the shipping to that cost? From the link you gave, it looked like it was going to cost you nearly $6 for shipping, making your cost per pound about $7.49
for a one pund bag…even my grocery store wasn’t that high!
I made my first batch on the stovetop yesterday morning. I can’t say it made me into an oatmeal convert, but it is much better than instant, and I willingly made a second bowl this morning from the leftovers. The first bowl I ate I added Splenda brown sugar blend, and milk, and some pecans I had already toasted, and a dash of salt. Quite nice. This morning I added salt, light vanilla yogurt, frozen raspberries and some Splenda…gobbled it up. We’ll see what combination I hit on tomorrow morning.
For anyone that missed it earlier, find a store that has bulk bins - they’re the way to go. Much, much cheaper than the tins (even if the tins have a certain retro sort of appeal). Sprouts has them, and I bet Whole Foods does too. Or whatever other similar store you have in your area.
My hubby found bulk steel cut oats at our local health food store yesterday (Vitamin Cottage, if you live in CO)! 2.4 pounds cost $1.66. I had bought some in a tin, but I collect tins, anyway, so no big deal there. He has some cooking right now! Yummmmm…
Shirley, I bought the stuff from that guy, as well. As Bulk bins are a thing of the past in my neck of the woods (oh, how I miss my Canadian shopping), this worked out to be cheaper than what the grocery store has.
Absolutely. I have dozens of different-sized heavy-duty graduated plastic storage containers–1pint to 5gal–that I buy from a restaurant wholesaler. I keep them full of everything from baking soda, brown sugar, raisins, tea, to rice, beans, pasta, sproutables, couscous, etc. I have a one-gallon bin that I bulk fill with steel cut oats every few weeks. WAY cheaper than the pre-packaged brands. Plus doubtless fresher.
What a great idea. I’ve been wondering where I can get some good canister-type things that won’t break the bank. We had mice (gone now, thank Terminix!), so I hadn’t been able to buy things like rice and flour in large quantities without worrying. I believe I’ll take a trip to the restaurant supply this afternoon. I need a couple of new thermometers anyway - my probe thermometer has gone all screwy.
Well worth a bump. I bought a tin of McCann’s Irish Oatmeal just after Christmas, but for some reason I waited until this past weekend to make a batch. Why did I wait so long? :smack:
Put me down as another who never cared for rolled oats, no matter what was added to them. Ran from them, in fact. missbunny was right on with her description of wallpaper paste. But then I tried the real stuff…
No real creativity here; thanks to your suggestions I toasted the oats in butter first, then added three cups of water and one cup of buttermilk. I left them with a bit of texture, mostly because I wanted to differentiate them in my mind from the rolled oats. A splash of milk and brown sugar on top when they were done. Wow. Now I’ll start getting creative with dried fruit, honey, maple syrup, nuts, etc.
I may temporarily forgo this breakfast once the weather warms up, but this is perfect for those cold New England winter mornings.
Thanks, folks.
