IRobot, the maker of Roomba, has filed for Bankruptcy

Old Roombas don’t die. They just stop doing the rhumba on your crumbas.

i has a sad. i do love my roomba.

After a career in electronic technology, the market does go in cycles. Each cycle is a different group of companies. Only a few survive more than one to become Microsoft or Apple. My resume looks like Perry Mason’s trail of dead bodies.

Me too for the first half of my career. What a shitshow.

I’ve had terrible luck with Roombas.

First one stopped charging its battery. Eventually I sold it on EBay for parts.

Second one wouldn’t stop charging the battery. It lost the ability to detect how much charge was in the battery, so instead of returning to its dock it’d vacuum until it died. If you forgot to pull it off the dock after two hours the battery would get, and stay, very hot. It eventually killed all of the batteries I had.

After having two fail shortly outside their warranty, I never considered another Roomba.

I later assembled a working Neato vacuum from a bunch of ones a robotics club was discarding. It worked fine until one of the edge detection sensors went bad. By that point Neato had already announced bankruptcy and pending closure, so I didn’t bother to repair it.

Now I have a cordless stick vacuum I can use to chase the dog or kid. It’s also terrible.
