iron batteries

That thread on Kamen’s IT reminded me of something another new technology. There’s a new type of alkaline battery in development in Israel. Here’s a link to an article on them.

So the scientists made a new cathode from “super iron,” a chemically unusual form called iron(VI) that scientists originally thought was too unstable for batteries because if it came into contact with liquids, it disintegrated into rust in minutes. But Licht discovered that the caustic solutions commonly used inside batteries actually stabilize the super iron so it doesn’t decay.

The super iron absorbs more electrons than the old-fashioned cathode, making it more powerful, Licht’s team showed.

There was a bit of media hubbub in August 1999 (which is when that article was written), but since then I haven’t heard squat. Does anyone know the status of this technology?

All I can find is that in December 1999 it won an award from Industry Week magazine.

Abducted, no doubt, by a crack squad of pink and white drunmmer bunnies, powered by dry cells of various makes. You know, this isn’t the first conspiracy that the battery makers have been in.
