Here’s one that’s been bugging me ever since it was pointed out to me a couple of years ago:
There’s an idiom in English “as far as X goes.” Well, people often forget the “goes.” Instead of saying “how are we doing as far as the budget goes?” they’ll say “how are we doing as far as the budget?” which doesn’t really make grammatical or logical sense.
I don’t know about that particular one, but I will often abridge a familiar phrase to where someone encountering it for the first time wouldn’t understand, because I don’t believe anyone out there is encountering it for the first time, and I’d rather save myself the typing and themselves the listening.
What annoys me a little is the increasing use of “in terms of x” in place of “as far as x goes”. “How are we doing in terms of the budget?”–“Some surplus, some deficit. But that’s the way the pocket vetoes.”
