Is 3D-TV Worth It Yet?

I’m looking to get a new TV soon (the old Insignia is having electronics problems again) and I’m looking at either the LG 47LV5500 (which is not 3D) or the LG 47LW5600 (which is 3D). The 5600 is about $100 to $200 more than the 5500, depending on the seller (Amazon is cheaper, Newegg gives you a “free” LG NAS which I don’t need, and either one gives you 10 pairs of glasses.) I do have a PS3, so I’ve got the 3D capability already and I could even get the 3D tier from my cable company. Consumer Reports likes them both, so I’m wondering if it’s worth spending the extra money to “future-proof”, although I question the adoption of home 3D.

I think the jury is still out as to whether 3D TV is the coming thing, of if this will be the final format - there are new designs of TV’s that will require no glasses.

That said, for only $200 or less, it might be fun to have the first set on the block. Plus, I saw a demo in my local Fry’s Electronics and, even though I am no sports fan, watching a basketball game in 3D was pretty amazing!

To watch a few of the better 3D films (Avatar, Up, Pirana 3D, etc.) in 3D at home would be cool for when the friends and family stop by.

I would say go for it - in the grand scheme of things, it is not a huge additional cost and could be fun for the occasional great film or sporting event.
