Is a bottle of wine per night gonna destroy my liver?

That explains why I can’t remember two hours of Saturday night.

I clearly dematerialized in the pub, then rematerialized back in my place with a half-eaten kebab in front of me, picked up from somewhere in the Miracle Zone.

Don’t you find it a bit odd that someone who has “dematerialized” his body is drinking 21 bottles of beer a day?

Watch out that you don’t suddenly materialize a couple of pints of vomit and the other half of the kebab.

Ascended testicles rematerialize in the scrotum after surgical correction.

So if you stop smoking, the risk of bad things happening goes way down. Does the same apply to drinking?

The mistake that many make is treating all alcohol exactly the same. It makes a huge difference where things come from. This is one of the few studies I have seen that differentiates mortality rates based on alcohol type:

Another thing one can do is just get some comprehensive blood work done at see how your liver functions are doing from time to time. Cirrhosis isn’t something that just happens overnight. If liver function were being eroded there should be red flags showing up in the blood work.

Zombie Alcohol - gives you a hangover years after initial consumption

Nice link, though.

Yearly “Is Quintas still alive?” bump.

"[Frank Sinatra] had gone to a new doctor who inquired about his alcohol intake. Frank stated, ‘I have thirty-six drinks a day.’ The doctor told him to be serious. Frank said that he was serious and that he drank a bottle of Jack Daniel’s every day, which figured to be roughly thirty-six drinks. Appalled, the doctor asked how he then felt each morning. Frank said, ‘I don’t know. I’m never up in the morning and I’m not sure you’re the doctor for me.’

The doctor died not long afterward, which in no small way always tickled the hubris of a certain impossible patient."

How about now?

This is exactly the point I try to make whenever someone brings up a health discussion such as this. I am not advocating all-out hedonism, and of course you want to take care of yourself, which the OP clearly stated that he did (exercise, eating right, etc.), but when did the objective of life become simply to live the longest? I, for one, would rather die horribly at 55 after having savored every moment than live to 100 and die in my bed having counted every calorie and abstained from anything that “might cause me later damage.” Sheesh. Sounds like some around here need to learn to live a little. I know a 70 year old man who eats, drinks, and smokes constantly, and moves furniture for a living. When it comes to health, no one has all the answers. If you enjoy your bottle of wine per night (which is not a lot at all relative to most people who drink alcohol regularly), then I say bottoms up.

If you drink a bottle of wine every night, for one hundred years, you will live to be very old.

I am new to this site so I hope this post is appropriate. I had the same question a few months ago and decided to do a before/after test to find out, since none of the info online had any actual data. It was all very subjective and I really couldn’t find an answer.

I went in for physical and had my doctor run a bunch of blood tests including a hepatic function or liver profile. I also made a note of some symptoms that I thought might be related to alcohol including heartburn (I took zantac daily) and sleepiness. The only part of my blood test that was off was GGT. It was elevated, but not concerning. After the physical, I stopped drinking.

I will be honest it was really lame. I didn’t feel any physical side effects. Psychological effects were real. I wasn’t looking forward to coming home and making dinner, wasn’t looking forward to going out with friends. We gradually started doing other stuff in the evenings. It wasn’t intentional. It just happened. Went running, walking, shopping, movies, whatever. It wasn’t more fun or less fun. It was just different. Not better, not worse. Just something else to do. One difference was that we did them alone. Whereas before we had people over for dinner once or twice a week, now we were spending more time by ourselves.

60 days later I repeated the blood tests. My GGT levels declined to normal level (<45). This was a good improvement. I’m not a physician, but my spouse is. GGT levels often increase when you are consuming too much alcohol. None of the other levels really changed, nor were they in bad shape to start with. In as much as GGT measures liver health, I definitely got “healthier”.

The biggest changes was in heartburn which disappeared. My sleep also improved, and I noticed I was less tired in the morning. I was able to wake up without a alarm clock, and basically popped out of bed at 6AM easily. I needed less sleep as well. I am an avid cyclist (both road & mountain), and used to wonder how people could do the early morning rides. I started doing them. And liked it. This sort of horrified me.

Which brings me to the downsides of my experiment.

The people I previously sought out on social occasions started to slip away. Not because of something they did. Because of me. I was less interested in going out to eat and drinking, and was becoming obsessed with exercise. I become “one of those people” who can’t miss a day at the gym. I was starting to suck…worse than I have ever sucked… I realized this when my friends at work were going out for happy hour on a Friday and I didnt want to go b/c of my 5:30 spin cycle class. Horrible. I had completed my transformation into “that guy” It would only be a matter of time until I was standing nude in the gym locker room, staring at my body in the mirror, and drinking from a gallon jug of water.

I didn’t like where this was heading, so I decided that what I needed to do was find a balance. I decided to treat like booze like I would treat unhealthy food. Smaller portion size, less frequent use. Basically I cut my consumption in half. Having one glass of wine wasn’t interesting to me, so I decided to reduce frequency from every day to 2-3 days a week and have 2-3 glasses a day on those days. Basically I picked a point between one glass per day and shot-gunning 4 bottles through a beer funnel on a Friday. My exercise freakiness went away, and I went back to exercising 3-4 days a week, and bailed on the morning rides.

This is probably the right balance for me. This may not work for others. Just wanted to share it b/c I thought someone might find it useful.

Moderation in all things, including moderation! Sounds like you found a great balance and a happy life. Kudos to you!

Many studies (funded by whom) will show that alcohol in moderation (whatever that is) is wonderful for the human organism and may prevent certain forms of disease.

The fact is that when alcohol enters the bloodstream, the liver goes to work immediately to rid the body of it. The liver treats it as a poison working to clear the body of it immediately, breaking up 95% of alcohol metabolized by the body. Alcohol will also depress brain functions ranging from balance to breathing.

I would go easy on alcohol.

The UK recommended weekly Alcohol limit is 28 units for a man.
[ 1 unit = Glass of wine or half pint of beer ]

An average bottle of Red Wine is equal to 9.4 units.

So Quintas is imbibing 65.8 units per week.

I’d say he’s not gonna ruin his liver with that amount.

I recal reading that Alice Cooper at the height of his drinking and coughing up blood phase was getting through 100 + bottles of Bud a day [ although I do wonder if pissheads are prone to exaggeration ]

as per what i can see no one have direct answer to that question i am suspecting that health effect studies is bias by the fact that no one have the same food regime and i seriously doubt that 1 or 2 or 3 bottle of wine would have a direct impact on health degeneration. But indeed it might have a impact on Pro health effect of wine. take it this wayt eating 2000mg of a vitamine might be good but when reach 6000 it might stress your body, but not to a point of being a health concern!

Drink water in between wine… lots of clean, pure water.

the UK can suck my cock.

I would bet that had more to do with differences in the lifestyles of those who chose to drink the various types than they types themselves.
