Is a Chicken Egg Just One Enormous Cell?

Don’t know where this one came from, but I gots ta know.

Ask A Scientist

Not the whole egg, but the yolk, before fertilization, is a single cell. The white and the various membranes within the shell are not part of the cell.

There is a small area on the surface of the yolk that contains the cell cytoplasm, nucleus, and other cellular components. The rest of the cell is filled with yolk material.

Oh…

ok.
Thanks!!
