The questions in the title, but for the story…I use injectable imitrex. For some reason the doctor I got the prescription from said that he thought the vials would come with the syringes (he was confusing it with something else, I knew this), but I ordered it anyways (from Medco, and online pharmacy). It didn’t come with syringes (as I expected) so I mentioned it to my MIL, who is one of his nurses. She grabbed me a handful and all was well. Until now, I’m just about out of syringes and she just left on vacation so I can’t ask her. I could call the office and talk to a PA or RN and probably get a script called in, but if I can just walk into Walgreens and buy a box that would be quite a bit easier then waiting around all day for someone to call me back.
So, in Wisconsin, can I just walk in to a Walgreens and ask for a box of 28g 1ml insulin syringes and get them, or do I need to get a script called in?
I don’t know Wisconsin law, but there is no state law in Georgia against it. But, there are laws that allow the pharmacist to refuse the sale. Do you get the imitrex filled at that pharmacy? If you have a history there they will “probably” sell you some, or at least give you enough to last you till you can get a script.
I haven’t filled it there in years, but I have had it filled there at some point. I should be getting my next shipment from Medco in the next day or two, I suppose I could bring the receipt from Medco in with me in case they ask why I need it.
cwthree: Actually, requiring a prescription by law is less common than you think, although I would not be surprised if there were pharmacy regulations/policies. A friend has a cat on insulin and she can go up to the counter at a random Target pharmacy without a prescription and obtain insulin syringes and insulin, no problem.
I know this is a lousy site for a cite, but it’s the best I could find that did not have dozens of pages of dense legalese.
According to that site, it would be worth at least explaining and asking the pharmacist. You are not (knock on wood) going to get arrested or similar for politely asking if they sell syringes for medication use without a prescription, so the worst that they can say is no.
I’ve never been asked for a prescription for any. You just have to get them from the pharmacy. If you go in there looking like a meth-head and say “Gimmee some that 'phedrin and some syringes…” Yeah, might be a problem. I’ve bought them to use to give my dogs their shots many times.
In Michigan you don’t.
Diabetic cat. Insulin is supplied by the vet, “shorty” needles are purchased from the pharmacist at the drug store. No prescription needed.
I have to stop at Walgreens or Target after work for some new shoelaces, so I’ll ask at the pharmacy, otherwise it looks like I can get them on Amazon.
