Is a very old will still outdated?

I was watching an old movie.

Basically the plot is

The kid is 10

His uncle is going to die, so he makes a will and leaves the kid $10,000 for college (very old movie so this is a lot of money)

Jist of the show. The uncle doesn’t die and lives another 40 years. Then dies

The will was never changed.

So now the “kid” is 50 and in order to get the $10,000 has to use it for college.

Plot – Old guy on campus with hilarious results

Here’s my question

In real life would that hold up? I am assuming the will is ruled to be 100% valid, no one contests it, etc…

Could the “kid” take it and not use if for college?

The age of the will isn’t really important, assuming it’s legally valid and no one challenges it during probate.

Generally, if the will disburses plain old cash from the estate, it can not restrict how the benefactor uses the cash.

But, the will could put the $10,000 in a trust fund, with instructions that the trustee only use the funds to pay college tuition for the benefactor. Lots of people set up trust funds like this to pay for education.
