The hubby has a possible interview at a place which is interested in growing algae as a biofuel source. It’s quite interesting to read about, but just how chancy of a business is this? I can’t tell if it’s a viable business yet or largely theoretical. The job market is quite good at the moment, and it would be a shame if he chose this particular job over another only to have the biofuel place tank (har!) a few months or a year down the road because it was a blue-sky proposition.
I need better brains than mine to sort this out, so I appeal to yours.
I can’t find any cite that claims algae biofuels are commerically viable yet. That doesn’t mean it’s not right around the corner. Unfortunately, it doesn’t mean it is, either.
There are some significant trials going on atColorado State University and New Mexico State University, among others.
Biofuels research is certainly hot right now, but like any new research, it might not develop into something successful. Or, it could be successful, only to be buried by the next big breakthrough a few years later. On the other hand, by getting in early, your hubby could win a Nobel Prize and/or make a kajillion dollars.
I’d put it in the “high potential upside, high potential downside” category.
