Interestingly, in Israel the word “football” (pronounced very similar to the Spanish “futbol”) refers to the American sport, which is not played here.
Soccer (AKA football) is known as “kaduregel.”
The nickname for the Aussie football (soccer) team is The Socceroos.
And the women’s hockey team are called The Hockeyroos.
I guess they figured “The Footyroos” would sound stupid…
How about the Down Underoos?
Soccer is not exactly missing from the English language in the mother country either. If I recall there is a TV show called something like “Soccer Saturday” and/or “Soccer AM”.
