Is anybody else watching The Deuce on HBO?

Did you also notice David Krumholz (from Numb3rs and the Harold & Kumar movies) as the porn movie director? He’s gained weight.

I am watching because I enjoyed The Wire. Slow build is right. Episode 6 was pretty slow moving but I think an engaging story will eventually emerge once things get rolling.

It’s great in my opinion. SO gritty and reminiscent of all the old movies from the 60s and 70s set in the seedy districts of New York (like Taxi Driver). The acting is fantastic and the story is really going places. It’s from the guy who made the Wire so settle in for some slow buildup, but it’s definitely worth it.

Oh YEAH…he was Evil, and for all WE know, he set up the beatdown himself! But, what really tore me apart was the sounds of her being struck and (probably) smashing into the lampstand. And, I cannot understand why anybody would want to break her jaw and her arm (the previous attacks on her.) I mean, I’m not stupid, I know it happens to those women. If Rodney had put her in a parlor, I’d actually be a bit grateful to him. At least, THEN, nobody raises a hand against her! I’m a physician, and that Resident at the hospital was a bit callous. With ME, she’d get the 10K check, off the streets, and then I hunt her assailants. I Hate Boy/Girl stuff, but feel like giving her a good slap and paying her college tuition. (Sorry if you’re reading that Maggie, but I love you and can’t even stand to see your characters get hurt.)

Not in all the bars I’ve worked at. Weekly pick-ups were the norm. If a machine got filled-up or broken in-between weekly visits there was a number to call. We always had a service tech there no later than the next morning.

You’re saying that was true when the bars were open and operating. I’m saying that the bar closed down and the mob people who owned it or took it over knew that it was closed. They wouldn’t let the money sit there during the long period a) before they brought in Vince and his guys to remodel it and b) during the time when Vince and his guys were in the process of operating it. That’s way more than a week in any case, but worse because during a) no one was around to protect the machines from a break-in and b) the machines weren’t being used but were still vulnerable. As soon as you hear about the closing, you send a guy down to protect your money.

I went back and checked.

In Episode 2 when the first visit the bar before discussing Vincent running it, Rudy Pipilo says “Me? I’m trying to put my machines in here, the jukebox, cigarette machine, like that…”

So those machines that Frank broke into and later smashed weren’t there under the previous owners. The money was just what had accumulated since they had been installed during the renovation.

I think many of you are looking for the wrong thing in this show. Sure the story is sort of important but the real point and emphasis of The Deuce are the characters and how they react to the changing Times Square environment and how they react over time. If you pay particular attention to Maggie and the girl-next-door bartender (forgot her name) and how they change, I think you’ll see what I mean.

That was a short first season. Nothing mind blowing really happened, but they did set things up for the next season. I liked it, but hope I don’t forget about it before season 2 starts.

I liked it ok enough to watch all of them, but as my free HBO subscription expired this week, I don’t know if I’ll find a way to watch S2. It’s not exactly my thing but I stuck around for the Simon aspects of it. Maybe I’ll binge when I get another free trial.

The board keeps eating my post.

Anyway- binged it, liked it.
Abbie is a terrible character.

Bump

Bumping this because I just finished S2.

Wow, that was better than S1 by a wide margin! I almost didn’t watch. I liked S1 well enough, I just wasn’t sure if I wanted to watch S2. Very glad I did.

They jumped ahead five years so we get to see Eileen be a success and we get to see the pimps slowly losing their power. Makes for some great TV.
