I expected better from HBO, was willing to give it a second chance, but two episodes in and I thought it was just terrible.
Am I the only one with a hate-on for this show? Are there any Hung lovers out there? Seriously, I’m wondering if there’s some redeeming feature I’m missing.
I saw just the last half of the second episode today, because I stopped by my friends house and he had it on. The only thing I could think to myself was:
There is no way this cute red-head would ever have to pay anyone to have sex with her. It’s called a bar. Go to it.
I, for one, love it. I think it’s funny, I think the male lead is perfect for it (don’t know his name off-hand), and I think the premise is interesting.
My wife also enjoys the show, which is a good sign. She usually hates the shows I find amusing. But this one works for her.
I wonder how women feel about the show. Do you find it demeaning in some way? If so, I just don’t see it. It’s not like women would never pay for sex. And that cute red-head would pay for sex if she wanted a no-strings attached relationship with a guy. Isn’t that what men use hookers for? (Ask Elliot Spitzer)
I hope the show catches on. HBO has been weak since it lost the Sopranos and the Wire. I can’t stand True Blood (what is it with these vampire shows, anyway?)
I really like it so far. As a woman, I do not find it demeaning in any way. Rather, I find it hilarious. The premise reminds me a lot of Weeds, actually. I do agree that HBO has gone somewhat downhill in its original programming. I do love Entourage and Big Love, but it is annoying to have to wait so long between seasons for the latter. I despise True Blood (which my husband loves, blech).
I like it too. Thomas Jane has just the right blend of clueless, loveable doofus and desperate guy that it works for him. I’ve only yet seen the first episode, but it made me laugh out loud several times.
As a woman, I don’t find it demeaning either. I like the woman who is trying to pimp. The premise sounds intriguing, but its execution seems to lack the smarts I’d expect. So far the humor is of the typical sitcom variety, not the clever dark sort that I’d expect from HBO.
I find the whole idea kind of dumb. Can’t HBO come up with something better? (well, I guess NOT).
I suppose it appeals to someone’s prurient interest (are they ever going to show “it”?)…yes, yes, I KNOW “there are women who will pay for sex”, I KNOW these creatures exist in the same way I know that a creature called the platypus exists. Yes. … The whole thing IMO is dumb because the guy sporting a huge member would make MUCH more money peddling it to gay men…How many women, really, would jump at the chance to pay to do the deed with Mr. Ed?
It reminds me a little too much of Weeds, actually. It’s clear they took the same premise and replaced “drug-dealer” with “gigolo.” And Secret Diary of a Call Girl already did the sex-worker-protagonist bit, although it was working off a very different premise. Like Weeds, the characters on Hung can be enjoyable, but they’re never entirely believable. That doesn’t bother me with Weeds because it has multiple plots moving at different paces and is constantly throwing its characters around in weird and unexpected ways. So far, Hung only has a few main characters and a single, slow-moving plot line. Granted we’re only two episodes in, so those may yet develop into something more interesting and complex. I hope.
That may be true enough, but the problem is there aren’t all that many ways for a straight man to peddle his member to gay men in which the member would be straight-up huge, so to speak.
But then, the same could be said for a straight gigolo trying to satisfy a female client for whom he feels no attraction whatsoever.
I don’t get HBO… have any of the clients been horrendously unappealing? And how did Thomas Jane’s character cope?
You’re not wrong in principle, but in this specific case, you missed the set-up in the first half. She’s a professional shopper and they were trying to get her to recommend their “business” to her rich, single clients. And she wanted to “test drive,” so to speak.
It gets one more episode from us. Too slow, not enough boobage, not very funny, and the kids are repellant in the extreme. I don’t like Anne Heche much, either.
You’d be surprised. When people pay for a prostitute it’s not because they can’t get laid it’s because they want to control the experience and not deal with hassles.
I watched the first episode and I’m willing to give it a shot. I am much more into Tanya than I am into Ray.
