You’ve got to love Armando Iannucci!
One that I just thought of (prompted by reading another thread) is the world “liqour” to describe alcoholic spirits. Makes me cringe.

that’s jack in the box’s fault about 10 years ago they had a commercial touting their big snack box of nuggets and the commercial was there were 4 teen/college-age types sitting around and they left for some reason and the girls ate all the nuggets and told the guys they got “nugged” (mugged) as she was trying to choke one down and the tag was "40 nugs for 8.99 "
I always have trouble remembering which way to say it – I know one of them’s wrong, but at this point it’s turned into my head into ‘the way I want to say it is the wrong one’, except that by now the way I want to say it would often have been the right one.
My vegan friends have been kind to me about this…
The Spongmonkeys are a delight. They also like the moon. Because it is close to us.
Also, we have a local Quiznos. And about a bazillion Subway franchises.
I’m confused. What about the word “vegan” makes you think it would be pronounced with a long-a instead of how it’s spelled? Do you say “begin” as “bay-gun”?
How do you pronounce “Megan”?
meh-gun.
I’ll say MAY-gun or MEH-gun depending on, I dunno, the phase of the moon or something. Same with a word like “omega” or “Sega” where the “-ega-” vacillates between “eh-guh” and “ay-guh.” Also Suzanne Vega or the star Vega I pronounce as VAY-guh (though I know the latter can also be VEE-guh.) So, I, too, had the issue of pronouncing it as “vay-gun” the first time I came across that word. (Although, to be honest, the first syllable I might pronounce more as /e/ than either /ɛ/ or /eɪ/.
It’s how you say “Vega”.
However the particular Megan pronounces it, I expect. Currently I don’t know any Megans. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard both “May - gan” and “Meg - an”, though.
Like a Las Vegan.
Why?
“Vegan” should be pronounced “veh-jun” because “vegetables” aren’t pronounced “veeg-tables”.
The way they assumed it would be pronounced is more sensible than how it’s actually pronounced.
Should it have been spelled “vejetables” then? That would have spawned “vejjies”, which somehow seems more annoying.
It’s from the Latin word “vegetare ”, which over time evolved into “vegetable” via France.
So blame them.
I used to hate it when people used Veggies, but some time over the past couple of decades I gave up the fight and joined them. I am so ashamed.
“Veggies” doesn’t bother me at all. As in I never even thought about it potentially being bothersome. But now that I’m aware I will make an effort to avoid using the term, and instead say “Vegables.” Soft “G” there.
I’m hoping that’s just a typo and not some new weird coinage I’ve never seen before.
How is “liquor” (sic) not a valid word for alcoholic spirits? IMO it’s the term for the stuff. “Booze” is slang, “spirits” alone means darn near any distilled liquid, including petroleum-based paint thinner, so liquor is the word.
How do you pronounce “Las Vegas”? How do you pronounce the term for the inhabitants: Las Vegans?
For me, having lived there, it’s VAY-guhs and VAY-guhns. Where my “uh” is somewhere between that sound and a true schwa sound. Now I’ll admit that that city’s name originates in Spanish. And there are many Spanish words incorporated into American that retain some semblance of quasi-Spanish vowel sounds.
To me, “vegan” as in vegetable-eater ought to be pronounced by analogy to “wagon”. so VEH-guhn where again my uh is somewhere near, but not quite, a schwa.
IMO “VEE-gun” is a total affection that precious people wanting precious attention for their precious issues coined. It’s a consciously extreme pronunciation to go with a consciously extreme personal lifestyle.
Folks are welcome to eat whatever / however they chose. I still think they picked a silly pronunciation for their word.
I’ve known several people who pronounce it Vaygun. They’ve all been older folks. I just assumed they never heard anyone else saying it.
Hey I’m “older” and we all said VAY-gun back in the day. We heard it from each other. I don’t know who said it first.
