Is anyone else [tired of hearing about Covid]

…tired of hearing about this 24/7? It’s not that I’m not concerned–I’m VERY concerned because of a granddaughter whose parents are going to have to decide whether or not to let her go to school this fall or keep her at home for safety’s sake.

But oh my gosh, I would so like to change the subject and have something a little more light-hearted once in a while. Or sports…now that the Seattle newspapers are nothing but corona virus, corona virus, corona virus, etc., I now dive for the sports section every morning. It has a lot about how the virus is effecting every aspect of sport, but there are other subjects too and I’m learning a lot more about professional baseball than I ever knew and it’s really opened my eyes to something I was never interested in before.

OK, verbally tell me how awful I am and all that. I’m 70 years old and I’m taken a few hits in my life so I can survive it

Sports are an iffy news topic. Some players are opting out of the season, for fear of infection.

And more and more professional sportspeople are testing positive.

You are in the same age bracket as Mr VOW and me. We end up watching reruns of old TV shows on MeTV, H&I channel, UP channel, etc.

~VOW

No. I check the daily stats for my state every day when they update them.
I don’t read about it all the time, but it is the crisis of our time, and it is getting worse and worse and worse. It will reach everywhere. It will reach me, and it will reach you. I’m not going to look up from my Star Trek reruns and wonder what the hell happened to the whole world while I was in hide mode.

@Ulfreida

Yes, it is a crisis, and yes, it is getting worse and worse. Wear a mask when you go out, keep social distancing, wash your hands frequently. You cannot do much more than that.

Update yourself with news occasionally, but keep in mind a steady diet of this horror and the way it is being handled will only raise your blood pressure and trigger anxiety attacks.

What better way to keep yourself calm and centered than with old Star Trek reruns?

Live long and prosper,
VOW

The TV, the radio, your computer, your smartphone, your tablet, and every other device that brings the outside world into your home has an “off” switch.

Every so often take a day to turn all that off, stay home, enjoy re-runs, read a book, or otherwise escape for a brief time the crapshow that is 2020.

The crisis will still be there the following morning when you check back in with the world.

I’ve chosen to dive deep into a computer game.
I am SO not a gamer.
I’ve had help getting started. Lots gamers around w/kids and Hamza.
But it relieves the constant barrage of bad news. Lowers the BP. Well, kinda. Sometimes the game gets exciting.

I walk. Usually twice a day. No electronics/screens in my ears and eyes.

Okay, I’m not going to spare you: it would be nice if you used a descriptive thread title. There’s a strong temptation to try to get people to read your threads by playing on their curiosity. It’s a rotten thing to do. If even 10% of posters took that approach, the board would be much more frustrating. Mutter.

And if you’re tired of everything being about the Covid-19, any other forum/category would be a better place to post.

But to answer your question, naw, I’m not tired of reading and talking about the pandemic. It’s key to my life, my livelihood, and the lives of my wife and child. But there’s a vast number of non-virus videos on Youtube, Netflix, Hulu; and more things to read than can be imagined. The virus touches almost every item in the news, but I don’t mind stepping away from live entertainment for a year or so.

Title edited to indicate subject. Please use descriptive thread titles. Moved to IMHO.

Yes. I’m tired of hearing about it, and if I don’t have to hear about it anymore and can ignore it, it’ll go away.

Yes, tired of it. When I talk to family or friends, I generally try to avoid the topic and discuss whatever else when possible.

Yes, I’m tired of it. But it’s not going away any time soon, so we’d better get used to it.

No, because I sometimes learn how to take care of myself and my community, and I can draw my own conclusions from data rather than assuming some pundit will do so for me accurately.

Hell yeah, I’m tired of hearing about it, largely because nothing of all you hear is really new, useful info. But more than that, I’m tired of THINKING about it - and damned if I can figure out how to stop THAT!

I came here to pretty much say exactly the same thing.

Unlike so many other news stories, this really DOES have the potential to affect anybody and everybody.

I 'm with @VOW, I have gotten the point where I let myself read the news twice a day, once in the morning, once before dinner and that’s it. Turned off the newsfeed on my phone so that I’m not pushing myself towards a massive stress-based stroke from the sheer horror and tragedy of it all. I don’t ignore it, don’t put my head in a hole in the sand like certain members of our elected ‘leaders’, but I cannot let myself dwell on it.

For those of us who use Steam’s gaming platform, this is a great time to get caught up on the backlog of games we’ve purchased but haven’t played. And while a Classic Trek Marathon is never a bad idea, it’s a bit too on the nose when you get to the right episode, so I suggest a non-stop MST3k marathon instead!

My area is not severely affected, and I personally think schools should reopen in August but I keep my “mouth” shut about it on social media.

This unusual event has opened up my eyes to so many things about humanity, about Government, about science, and about socio-economics that I was blissfully ignorant of and assumed were under a lot more sensible control and preparedness than it has turned out to be. Sometimes we need a crisis to lay bare our shortcomings, and to fix things going forward.

I’m not sick of it at all, I am fascinated by how it’s playing out, and wondrous at living inside a sci-fi movie.

Whenever do get overwhelmed by it, I play video games or watch a TV show. Taking breaks is the best way to manage stress.

I’m tired of people bitching about masks and not being able to get haircuts or hang out in bars. The rampant ignorance and selfishness is appalling, bordering on terrifying. But I’m definitely glad that my daughter is no longer a teacher in Orlando.

Apart from a quick morning check of the news on line, I try to avoid it till I turn on the local news in the evening. My husband, tho, always flips back and forth among various shows and 24-hour news. It makes me crazy!

I’ve been playing a lot of stupid puzzle games on my tablet, but those are starting to bore me. I have some books I want to read - also hard to do with a toddler granddaughter who wants interaction.

Mostly, I’m hoping for a good result in November to get this country back on track to health and sanity. Yeah, I’m a dreamer…

A lot of the news on COVID reminds me of the body-count reporting during the Vietnam War.

Yes as well as constant lectures on racism. I’m also tired of the endless shaming. I don’t need to see a video 80 quadrillion times of some one who won’t wear a mask in a store.

And, I don’t need a fucking lecture on race relations from a damn pizza place, just tell me what the specials are like you used to.

So, yes, I’ve detached as much as I can. My SDMB and social media time has gone way down. Even in my sports discussion groups, anyone going off on tangent gets smacked down by an admin. Otherwise, I’ll just leave the group.
