im looking into this, it looks like a lucrative (by my standards) career. starting wages are about $10/hr and work up to 13/hr with experience. if you can find a union you can make over 20/hr but that takes several years experience. Plus i like engineering but don’t want to do a 4 year engineer degree for a variety of reasons.
So is anyone a HVAC technician? How is the job market for it? is it possible to be a HVAC tech with a mildly bad back?
A friend of mine owned an AC company here in FL. He didn’t have the contractor’s license and his contractor was leaving the company so…he fudged the paper work and got me in to take the state test. It wasn’t that hard to pass, but he ended up closing shop shortly thereafter. So here I sit with a commercial HVAC license and I have no desire to ever work in it or start a business, and here’s why:
It is a cut throat business. Everyone is out to screw each other. Its dirty. Its hot. Ever been in an attic in the summer? Its about F 125. The only possible way to make any money is to first get experienced enough to work on your own as a sub. But going to engineering school is probably easier than working for some dickweed, making him rich while you sweat. Then you will need your own truck/van and thousands of dollars worth of tools, pumps etc. But once you’ve done all of that, you can pull in 1K a week and 2K a week in the summer.
