Is anything prescribed for morning sickness?

Posted by Qadcop Nothing in the US is approved for HEG. Bendectin was, but got pulled due to liability fears in the early 80’s. Many claimed the drug (which did have a documented benefit of reducing nausea and vomiting) caused birth defects, and people sued. A lot. Despite the fact that no credible study showed any link, the drug company pulled it off the US market, as the profit from selling it in the US would never outweigh the costs of defending it. It is still available in Europe and elsewhere.

Bendectin is/was a combination of vitamin B6 and doxylamine. You can get the same benefit by taking 12.5 mg of B6 in the morning and the afternoon plus 25 mg at night, along with 1/2 tablet of doxylamine in the morning and and afternoon and a full tablet at night. Doxylamine is available in the States as a sleep aid called Unisom. There is no product available in the US which has these ingredients together mainly because of the liability issues. Howevether, this combination has received an “A” rating in safety in pregnancy for reducing nausea, and as far as I know, is still available in Canada. Vitamins and 1st generation antihistamines (which is what we’re talking about) are used routinely in pregnant women are generally regarded as “safe”.

I agree with the ginger recommendation. Also if you go and look in the drug store there are ittle wristlets you can buy that put pressure on certain points in your wrists. This is supposed to be a form of accupressure that will suppress the nausea.

I tried them and found they worked. Good luck and remember it will get better. I found once the day I entered my second trimester the nausea just disappeared.

Heh, cool. That’s precisely the day I *started * throwing up. I had thought I was home free.
