I just got back from Texas over the weekend, and fell in love with it. My boyfriend is from Lago Vista, and since I loved it so much we are debating on moving there (Lago Vista, right outside of Austin) in November. I don’t know much about it, except that is is beautiful, spacious, the real estate is cheap, and the people are so friendly! I’m sick of big city life, and have been for some time. So tell me anyone - is this a nice place to live? I just thought I would get some opinions from people who are familiar with this area… Thanks!!
visited a couple of times, seems really cool. Had a buddy that lived there and loved it.
Not in the summer. It gets downright hot.
Ohhhh, you don’t mean literally? Yes. Austin is a great town, although I have no idea what you mean about cheap real estate. Pluses include good food, fabulous music scene and proximity to outdoor recreation opportunities. Not to mention Hippie Hollow
Ahhhh… tubing the Guadalupe …
Hmmm… when I checked out the real estate in Lago Vista it seemed very reasonable… but hey, compared to Chicago anything seems cheap I suppose…
We had a lot of fun there - aside from the fact that it was 88 degrees at 5:00am every morning.
Great nightlife, beautiful scenery, good schools, etc.
Well, at the moment, real estate in Austin isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s cooled waaaaay down. If you want to rent, there are loads of very good, very inexpensive apartments to be had. And if you’re in a position to buy, now is a great time (it’s not likely to get cheaper!).
The current drawback to living in Austin (a drawback now shared by many other places) is the economy. The high tech world, which was booming here a few years back, is stagnant, and the state government (which faces huge deficits) isn’t hiring at all. So, finding a good job could be tough. But assuming you can find a decent job, Austin has a lot to offer. I’ve been here 17 years, and love it.
If you have specific questions about Austin, I’ll be happy to answer them as best I can.
astorain - thanks! That is good info. As for living in Lago Vista, is the commute very bad to Austin? I’m already guessing it’ll be a tight job market - but I do administrative work so hopefully I should be able to find something. How would you describe the people?
I lived there 1980-1987 and loved it. The music scene was incredible. Lots of great things to see and do. I left only because I graduated and got a job offer I wanted elsewhere.
Another vote for Austin, TX being an amazingly cool place. I just found out about a job offer there today and may look into it.
