Joe Biden would be the first VP that I can say I actually met. I was way too young to care, it was back in the mid to late 70’s . He came to my house! My grandparaents were out and he knocked at the door, told me was Joe Biden and he was running for office and wanted to speak to my parents.being a kid I was told not to speak to strangers and definitely not let them in the house when I was lone, so I remember saying “They’re not here…I can’t talk to strangers. Goodbye”. But I saw him knock on the doors of the neighbors as I watched from a window.
I don’t claim to have intimate knowledge of Biden outside of what I’ve learned since he was nominated. I don’t live in (don’t plan on returning to) Delaware anymore. But a quick glance of his wiki page had this
It made me wonder about how many other politicians have their kids serving in the military. Biden’s son doesn’t have to serve, even if its the National Guard. (for the record I was in the DE national Guard before going on active duty so I’m not knocking the NG. ). His dad is a senator and he he has the education, clout and status to get out of it if he really didn’t want to go to Iraq. Is he deployed right now? I don’t know. The fact that his son is serving and that Biden didn’t “get him out of it” is kind of important to me. Wherever you live, do your local politicians have kids in the service? Does it mean anything to you or not?
The OP’s cite says he will be deployed in October. Does that answer the question?
Regardless, my guess is that neither Palin’s son nor Biden’s will be in Iraq after she or he is elected VP. Too much propaganda potential for the enemy if they are killed or captured.
Thats true…I was just wondering if politicians…any politicians… have offspring in the military that can be potentially deployed. I’m sure some do. Its more of a question than a debate, so I probably posted in the wrong forum and I apologize for that.
John McCain’s elder son is a Marine, and he and his unit returned home from Iraq in February, 2008. His younger son is a Midshipman at USNA, and certainly could be deployed anywhere after graduation and schooling in the art of warfare.
Huh. Some years back Michael Moore noted how few legislators had offspring who were serving in Iraq.* But here we have 3 Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates whose children may find themselves in harm’s way.
In case somebody wants a cite for the OP: Biden’s son, Delaware Attorney General Capt. Beau Biden, is a member of the National Guard and will be deployed soon.
Michael Moore: an entertainer, not a serious source, IMO.
Thanks for pointing that out, I hadn’t noticed the move. The time stamps show that the post I noted was made at 7:15 and **samclem **moved the thread at 6:55. So technically, the post was made 20 minutes *after ***samclem ** moved the thread. Had I issued an official warning, I’d surely give Spartydog the benefit of the doubt and retract the warning. After all, he might have started that post before **samclem **moved the thread. As it was, I didn’t think the post merited a warning in the first place, which is why I did a Moderator Note instead. The reminder still applies because now we’re in General Questions.
The point, dear, is that you can stick someone’s high-profile kid into a war zone, not that McCain/Biden/Palin’s kids will be deployed because the British said so.
Doesn’t the immediate family of the VPOTUS/POTUS enjoy Secret Service protection? Would be extremely bizarre to have a soldier in Iraq guarded by the SS.
I suppose that’s the indefinite you, eh? At any rate, where did I say you can’t? Where did the OP ask if it were possible?
The deployment of Prince Harry has nothing to do with whether the VP’s sons will be deployed. My answer concerned whether it *would *happen, not whether it *could *happen. One clue was the phrase “My guess …”.
