Is Black Friday turning into Rake Friday?

Many of my neighbors were raking and leaf blowing their yards clear of leaves yesterday. Mine was mostly done, but I was inspired to get out my rake and broom and tidy a bit more.

Around here, no one seems to do chores on extra days off.

E.g., in my family, all the Xmas stuff comes down on New Years Day. But walking around the neighborhood, I see most people don’t bother taking down their lights then, or on MLK day, let alone any weekend in between. Leaving them up until whenever. Ditto other obviously necessary yard work.

I did my last “big” leaf clearing Sun/Mon. Did a quick cleanup of the front yard Thursday. Will do a quick job on the back before the next rain. Not much more after that.

We had to have our leaves done and piled up in the road by November 20th. That was the last day the village will be picking up leaves. I’ve had enough for the year. I’ve spent at least 15 hours leaf blowing this Fall. We have a large yard, lots of trees and I’m a bit anal.

I did haul the rest of my leaf piles today (Saturday). I rake them into piles and then haul them to the city compost site.

In previous years we have received a major snowfall before I get to all the piles and I have to wait until spring.

We raked. Last yard waste pickup is Monday so unless we wanted to keep the bags 'til April we had to rake. I HATE yardwork. But it’s over.

A few years back, we invested in a mulcher/vac that’s towed behind the riding mower - it makes short work of the leaves, and since we have 3 acres, there’s plenty of space to dump the mulched leaves and let them decompose for future garden use. If we weren’t able to dump in our yard, I’d be hauling the leaves to the county landfill where they grind up yard debris and give it away to residents.

I don’t think we’ve ever lived anywhere that specifically did leaf pick up.

I live in a small unincorporated enclave surrounded by incorporated suburbs. The township started collecting our leaves via vacuum truck off the curb a couple years ago. Reason being that, prior to that, we all burned our leaves having no ordinance prohibiting it (again, unincorporated) and I assumed the folks two blocks over weren’t too happy about the situation.

Our last pickup was two weeks ago though. Fortunately a wind storm had knocked most of the leaves out of the trees because the silver maples in my yard can hold on to them until January if the conditions are right. Still need to go over the lawn one last time with the mower and mulching plate though.

I was out raking too. Last pickup is Dec 4, so I wanted to finish up. Since I never go out on Black Friday, it’s a good day to get the yard done. Pop on the headphones and tunes, and enjoy some simple life chores and alone time.

I was expecting this thread to be about encountering handsome men with disarming charm who took your love, disappeared without a trace and left you ruined; while shopping at Target.

Heh, around here it’s more like “snowblowing Friday”.

Friday was a beautiful day here. We did yard work and lit the brush pile that we build all year in a corner of the horse pasture. It was an awesome bonfire that was still smoldering a bit Saturday night.

Around here, yard waste collection runs thru November. Last week was the last chance to have leaves, sticks, etc picked up until spring.

That’s what I did Friday. Of course I have a mulching mower so I didn’t actually rake anything, just turned the leaves into fertilizer when I mowed the lawn.

Oh, I did buy a mop and a hose at the hardware store, but my wife tells me that doesn’t count as Black Friday shopping.

Did I miss a BF thread, retail horror stories and so forth ?

This is the only one I have seen, other than BF in other countries.
