Is “Borat” a real name in eastern Europe?

I’m not familiar with the name, but it’s worth noting that the character Borat is allegedly from Kazakhstan, in Central Asia (the northern 75% of what used to be “Turkestan”).

That’s true, but I don’t think he speaks English with the accent of someone from Central Asia. In fact, it sounds to me like people from Eastern Europe when they speak English. It’s something that kind of detracts from the character, in my opinion.

95% of Kazakhs speak some Russian and only ~65% speak Kazakh, so that actually wouldn’t be so farfetched ;).
