Is "Buy.com" reliable? (Also, MP3-CD players)

Anybody ever buy stuff from http://www.buy.com? Any problems? Everything arrive OK?

I want to buy the Rio Volt MP3-CD player from them, they have the best price I’ve seen (disregarding sites that I never heard of, that are only a couple bucks cheaper anyway).

BTW, avoid the MEMOREX MP3-CD player. I just returned that piece of crap; it skipped playing damn 48kbps spoken word MP3s, while motionless on a table. High bit-rate music MP3s would skip more, and screech. And it wasn’t just my unit, I did a web search and found many people with these same problems. Don’t they test these friggin’ things before shipping them?

I learned my lesson and read reviews; the Rio Volt sounds cool, and performs well.

I’ve never had a problem with them, and I’ve ordered quite a few times. I’ve heard some horror stories, but nothing that discouraged me from buying from them after hearing them.

And yes, they are cheap.

You may also want to check out the Philips Expanium MP3-CD player. It is excellent, plays all types of MP3’s, and is very reliable.

My brother ordered my CD burner from them. Not only did it arrive perfectly safe and sound without any signs of damage to the outside of the package, it arrived early.

The Philips Expanium looks nearly as good, but it lacks WMA support and display of song titles or folder names. It also can’t read DirectCD CDs. I don’t think it has the ability to dload new firmware to fix these or any other problems.

OK, I got impatient and ordered the Rio Volt from buy.com.

I have my mp3 player for my car, its the aiwa cdc-mp3. I am very happy with it. as an indash player it has 18 fm presets, 12 am presets, the cd player, and an aux in on the front to attach other devices. The cd player can read regular CD’s and CDR’s and RW’s that have data MP3’s copyed to them (read here 148 songs per CD). The player also reads individual folders and subfolders so you can arrange the music however you wish.

the price tag is a little hefty, $300 when I got it six months ago, but its well worth the cash.

I also have the Aiwa player in my car, it’s pretty nice. It doesn’t seem to like the higher bit rates though, I tend to get skips above 128kpbs. And I’m pretty sure it can’t handle variable bit rate.

By the way, is it my imagination, or does the thing totally lack a PAUSE function? I found that to be annoying. Plus, it doesn’t resume playing MP3s from the spot it left off once I start my car, like it does for CD audio. That’s also an annoyance.

I bought some DVDs from buy.com and had no problem. They didn’t have everything I ordered in stock, but they sent stuff as soon as they got it in.

I’ve ordered quite a few things from them over the last few years, mostly DVDs, a good deal on a new printer one time, that sort of thing. Never had the slightest problem with them, though I’ve also heard occasional horror stories about their customer service.

Revtim, my dad builds computers and purchases from buy.com constantly. It is very reliable.

Not to knock your CD player, but I’ve been told the Aiwa in-dash mp3 player is another story. I recently had my car stereo system stolen (approx. value = 1/2 the value of the car, or almost 2 grand) and insurance fully replaced it with new components of my choosing.

When discussing with the installer which components I should choose, he specifically warned me away from the Aiwa. “Don’t work” is all he had to say about it. He said it simply does not work well. He steered me towards the Kenwood 8701 or whatever it is, it’s the replacement for the Z919 at any rate. I love it. It is incredible! No skips yet, reads CD text, any type of burned CDs, displays DNPS information, folder information, song number, song name, file name and so on. It also holds its’ position in a song while turned off, has an excellent method of handling folders within CDs, has many, many EQ presets and many options for setting your own… I could go on. It’s an incredible machine, and if you’re unhappy with yours, I’d recommend replacing it with the new Kenwood unit. I sure love mine!

Consider this the end of the infomercial.

If I’m thinking of the same model, I seem to recall the Kenwood car player being about $400, versus $250 for the Aiwa, so it’s not surprising the Kenwood is better.

I’m happy enough with Aiwa to stick with it.

my aiwa has only ever skipped when I’m driving like a bat outta hell – I’d make any CD player skip when I’m driving like that. ya get used to the fact it dosent pickup MP3’s in the middle of a track

It is true that there is absolutely no pause function…I had never noticed…I guess I didnt use that feature on my sony either…I do like the mute button, nice to turn the raido down at stoplights

in short, I’m entirely happy with mine.

Sure, I have ordered from them just fine. But its now better for me to buy from Circuit City for electronics. Easier to return.

I’d like to buy this thing locally too, but I’ve never seen in any store. I checked Circuit City, Best Buy, Brandsmart, and that’s about it for this area.

has been great. We’ve bought a lot from them over the past few years. Never had a problem.

I’ve also purchased quite a few things from buy.com, and never had a problem.

It’s funny about CD-MP3 players and skips. Some reviews of a particular unit will say it skips if you think about it too hard, and other reviews of the very same product will say it can take gunfire without skipping. Odd.
