I’m talking voluntary concubinage here, of course. If I wish to assemble a harem for my own pleasures (let’s assume I have the looks of a Greek god and the ladies are lined up round the block to sign on) would I run foul of any federal or state laws?
I’m assuming BTW:
- All involved are of legal age.
- No monetary inducement is offered
- I have no eunuchs with huge scimitars standing guard outside
Plenty of people do it without a problem. Hugh Hefner is one notable example. The state doesn’t care how many people you sleep with unless you are married to more than one of them. That introduces all kinds of legal issues and is the big reason polygamy is illegal. You might have a problem in some jurisdictions if you refer to more than one of them as wives because of common law marriage rules in some places but, leave the marriage out of the picture completely and you should be Ok. There are some weird laws in places about the number of unrelated people that can cohabitate to that isn’t exclusive to this question.
As long as you neither marry nor claim to be married as a religious idea, you are fine, except for under age, compulsion, etc. I think even armed guards are OK.
One word: Winning!
Actually, you might run afoul of a state law in Utah. It is illegal to “live a polygamous lifestyle” in that state, although I don’t know if that statute is ever enforced or if it would survive a court challenge.
I couldn’t pass the testimonial…
Heck, even “slavery” is legal, so long as it’s voluntary. Look at the vast S/M master-slave culture. That’s the great thing about freedom of speech: I can claim to be Emperor of California…or my girlfriend’s slave…and no laws are violated. (Doggone that collar, though: too tight…)
