Some signs of “normality” that I have enjoyed throughout the Covid crisis is the continuing road and building construction.
I am a bit surprised at all the building construction, putting in new hotels and office buildings, but I assume that things were put in motion long before the current pandemic and canceling them at this point would cost more than finishing and sitting on an empty building for a while.
They are also doing quite a bit of road construction. My daily commute takes me through two construction sites. One of which is a bridge in the middle of a transition, so is in terrible shape for commuters. A silver lining of Covid is that traffic is lighter, so the poor traffic flow isn’t too bad.
My concern is that construction comes to a standstill while in this precarious state.
The reason for this concern is overwhelmed hospitals.
Even if you can get in, delays make things worse. What could have been minor becomes major, what would have been major becomes critical, and what would have been critical becomes life threatening. Of course, life threatening simply becomes life ending.
If you were in construction, or if you ran a crew, would you feel comfortable working with dangerous equipment next to idiot drivers all day, if you weren’t sure that you could get medical treatment in the case of an accident?
If you were a governor or local authority, would you allow construction or other hazardous jobs to continue while there is limited or even no room in the hospital?
