The movie’s events occur on Christmas Eve and so it is widely considered to be a Christmas movie, but I am a contrarian on this one and do not agree it is a Christmas movie. It could have taken place any time, changing nary a line of the script.
As was already pointed out upthread, this was because Willis has obviously turned senile in his old age.
I am pleased that most Dopers have the common sense to see the truth.
Hmmm…can’t agree with this one. Christmas is integral to the storyline (that’s why the family is on vacation, why the crooks are breaking into all the houses, why the mom gets help getting home, etc).
There’s also the sub-plot that while the kid is having fun living on his own, he eventually comes to the realization that, crappy as they seem sometimes, having your family with you on Christmas is really important.
Christmas movie.
As further proof of the righteous consideration of Die Hard being a Christmas movie, the local CBS affiliate’s morning show today had all four hosts tell their favorite Christmas movie, followed by a clip of the selection. One chose Die Hard as his favorite.
If you asked me when the movie came out, I’d say no.
Now I say yes, because of the way the word is today.
Ho ho ho, now I have a machine gun.
This, THIS, may have convinced me… But wait, then why isn’t Die Hard’s name ‘Chris Christmas’ or “John McCringle” at the least?
Did the other three hosts immediate beat that guy down for his ridiculous choice?
A fun read… Using data to determine if Die Hard is a Christmas movie
The conclusion?
Oops. Harkins is no longer showing Die Hard Tuesday. No word is given as to why. It just isn’t in the lineup any longer.

All Die Hard, all day on IFC.
Well, our votes then even out. I voted “No” before, but I’ve changed my mind to “Yes.”
No, they praised him in admiration, and rightly so.
It just kills you that you’re wrong about this, doesn’t it?
Nah. I’m with Bruce Willis. You know, the STAR of the movie? Way better side to be on than the completely wrong one
Willis’ dementia has already been pointed out in this thread.
Personal attacks against someone who is right when you are wrong is a well-known phenomena
And just to point out, “at least” means “probably most if not all.”
As has become a personal tradition I am resurrecting this thread for another season. Yippie Kai Ay!
