Is E! mocking the FCC?

So, I’m watching Wild On. They have a random montage of attractive, scantily clad women. Giant pixel boxes block the “goods”. During a pan down the body of one model I saw a pixel box over her ankles. I’m sure it was there. Is E! poking fun at prudishness, am I hallucinating pixel boxes to protect my fragile mind from the sexy, sexy ankle, or something else?

Maybe there was an obscene tattoo on her ankle?

Or perhaps a tatto of a trademark, like a Nike swoosh or something. The do it for clothes all the time.

I had considered an obscene tattoo, though not a corporate one, but I figured that they would have dealt with that while shooting the footage. Of course, it is possible that at the time they didn’t think it would be a problem and later on were told it would be.

Regardless it is one of the most absurd things I’ve ever seen. Seeing a protective pixel patch around a woman’s ankles cracked me up, especially as they then cut to a woman wearing a soaked, see through t-shirt with no pixilation at all.

MTV pixels all sorts of corporate logos and such. The tattoo may even be something a bit illegal, like a marijuana leaf.

Let’s also take this time to point out that, as a cable channel, E! is not under the regulations of the FCC. and isn’t constrained by the same regulations as, say, NBC.

They seem to be about the strictest cable channel when it comes to censorship though.

On the few occasions that I’ve accidentally turned to that waste of a station (besides Talk Soup in the mid/late 90s, nooge), I’ve seen them blur such things as two girls kissing, and that was in the middle of the night. I doubt most networks would blur that, even in primetime.

My understanding of cable channels and blurring for decency is that certain cable carriers require it, or they’ll drop your station. This is complete hearsay, and I’m happy to have my ignorance squashed on the subject.

Even though cable stations are not regulated by the FCC the individuals involved in producing television for cable are likely to have opinions on the FCC and censorship issues, hence the thread title.

I was flipping around the TV the other night and saw a few seconds of I Love the 90s on VH1… they were reading a piece of the infamous Starr Report describing the infamous cigar incident between Clinton and Lewinsky. They bleeped the words “inserted” and “vagina” while showing them in large text flowing behind the speakers. I think they bleeped “head” or “blow job” a few seconds later.

It would’ve been a good joke, but there’s no way. This network shows how many near-naked women every day, and they can’t use the scientific name for a body part they all have?

During the first season of The Joe Schmo Show on Spike TV they pixilated the chest (i.e. man-boobs) of Brian (“The Buddy”) Etheridge during one episode. I can only assume two possibilities for this. (Spike TV isn’t afraid to be a bit risque.) 1) It was just another joke. 2) Brian is somewhat self-conscious. I’m leaning towards the first reason.

Anyhoo…
