Recently a gang of ecstasy drug traffic was bust in my city… and apparently they traveled frequently to Europe and especially Holland to get those pills. They were 20 somethings… poor sods… It seems like an awful lot of work in order to get a few hundred ecstasy pills all the way to Brazil… I thought Ecstasy was a lab drug… something you could cook up more or less easily. (Apparently they exchanged cocaine for the ecstasy over in Amsterdam…)
So why does ecstasy get smuggled into Brazil ? Why not set up labs to make it locally ? Is it that complicated to do it ?
I’ve heard that it’s not complicated, just difficult. Do the tiniest thing wrong, and you get a similar substance that has none of the intended effects. It takes a good chemist to get it right, and to do it consistently.
MDMA (Ecstasy) is more difficult to synth than methamphetamine, but it isn’t particularly hard to make. HOWEVER, you do have to know chemistry. Much easier to get cocaine in Brazil and do a swap. Sounds to me like these 20 somethings were bozos. What gang is interested in obtaining quantities of just a few hundred pills? Looks more to me like they intended to use those pills themselves. My best guess is that MDMA is a rather unpopular drug in Brazil, hence there is little local production.
it is not hard to make (2 steps from the right starting materials). However, those starting materials are well known to the chemical suppliers and anyone ordering them would be under immediate scrutiny
Ecstasy is catching on only recently in Brazil… its more trendy in the nightclub scene and with tecnho heads. The volume being sold certainly might not warrant an industrial scale production of ecstasy… but I guess no one does it in that scale anyway !
