My monitor says it can go up to 1600x1200, but through my video card’s software, i can get it up to 1920x1440 or even 2048x1536. If I keep my resolution like that for long, will my monitor die quicker?
If you’re using an LCD monitor, yes - you should really only use the native resolution of the monitor. Forcing resolutions on an LCD will cause problems with ghosting and such later on. So not only will death come sooner, but it will be a slow and painful one. If you’re using a CRT monitor, you should be able to do what you want. The bulkiness has its advantages.
LCDs can’t physically go higher than their native res so theres no point even trying.
CRTs, 3 things can happen. It could just refuse to display that res full stop, it could display it but at a lower refresh rate which will cause headaches and eye fatigue. It could display it at still an acceptable refresh rate but you will have less than 1 phospher triad per pixel which means the image will look grainy.
Personally, 1600x1200 is enough for most situations and websites that are hardcoded for 1024 or even 800 will look awful at anything more.
It’s a bulky 21" Cornerstone CRT (my monitor). The reason I need to super high resolution is because of a video game I play. The higer the resolution, the more stuff I see, the faster my reaction time, the better I get, etc. Is there a recommended procedure for forcing higher resolutions? I have a GeForce 4 Ti4200.
