Is Fox and Friends really as dim-witted as Jon Stewart makes it out to be?

I thought that too, but like the nickname “dittoheads” (which I also thought was an insult) it’s legit.

I’m convinced that Steve Doocy is a method actor who studied every TV show and movie in which Fred Willard ever played a cheerful braindead announcer (e.g. Fernwood/America 2 Nite, Best of Show) to get his character down pat. The irony is he’s paid a lot more for playing Fred Willard’s stock village idiot than Fred Willard probably is.

OK, my first impression here is “Wait, what? “Fox and Friends” is really the name of the show?!” I just assumed it was a belittling Doper nickname for Fox News in general

I’ve never seen an episode of this show, but isn’t it essentially Fox’s right-wing version of “The View”? If so, they’ve got to be working pretty hard to be dumber than the idiots on that show. Maybe they are, but it’s a real race for the bottom of the bell curve between those two shows.

As for Gretchen Carlson, I’ve never heard a word she’s uttered as far as I know, but I just looked her up, and she’s clearly not stupid. If she comes across as stupid, I have to assume she’s either putting on an act to appeal to the lowbrow viewers of a show like this, or you guys are exaggerating because of bias.

She’s also not ugly. She’s an attractive 44 year old woman. Here’s her Miss America bio. According to them, she didn’t just attend Stanford - she graduated with honors, then went on to study at Oxford. She also studied violin at Julliard. It’s kind of hard to get by on your looks in the Julliard violin program. Hell, just getting accepted is a major accomplishment.
How about Monica Crowley, another fixture on Fox? Is she also ugly and stupid?

She’s about as attractive as most beauty contest entrants - which is, not particularly.* Beauty contests attract women who know quite a bit about concealing their flaws and maximizing their assets, but the vast majority of them are, underneath it all, less attractive than many non-contestants. I see women that I find far more attractive than most Miss Americas any day of the week in downtown Chicago.

Look at her official Fox News head-shot. This, presumably, a the photograph of herself with which she is happy, the result of efforts by stylists, make-up artists and the photographer. I don’t know what your standards are like, but she appears (to me) less attractive than half the soccer moms in your average suburban grade school.

Right. So why is she playing an idiot on TV? Why did she claim to have to look up the word “ignoramus”?

If you’re going to play stupid, don’t be surprised when people assume you are.

  • Note: I have been the television technical director for the Miss Missouri and Miss Kansas pageants.

As I said, I think she’s a perfectly attractive 44 year old woman. I never said she was a world-class beauty. But she isn’t unattractive.

As for playing stupid… Have you ever seen morning TV talk shows? They’re all stupid. I suspect it’s because they are appealing to a demographic that trends towards the stupid. The View isn’t exactly rocket science. Isn’t F&F up against programming like The Today Show, with those amazing Geniuses Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera? Or Regis and Kelly?

I’m guessing there’s a morning news rule similar to the old, “write at a grade 8 level” rule for writers of pop non-fiction.

The Today Show, CBS’ Morning Show, or ABC’s Good Morning America are more apt comparisons to Fox and Friends than The View. And yet none of the first three shows have the same obvious political narrative and axe to grind that Fox and Friends have, up to and including making suspicious factual mistakes or misrepresentations about political figures in the midst of a scandal by labeling them as democrats. Now here is another misrepresentation from Fox and Friends that casts a Middle Eastern investor in a suspicious and dubious light due to his support of the Muslim community center near Ground Zero yet also conspicuously failing to mention his name or that he is a major stock owner of Fox News’ parent company. This is at a level beyond journalistic incompetence.

I’ve said all along that if this Talaal guy were posing in a golf cart with Bill Clinton and owned a share of CNN or NBC, Fox would be all over the issue with enough outrage to fuel a thousand suns. They’d not only mention his name, but his home address(es) and post pictures of all his villas…

Brian Kilmeade and Susan Lucci make out on Fox and Friends:

At least Kilmeade didn’t make out with a zombie.

Then again, considering it’s Susan Lucci…

Kilmeade just wanted to kiss someone who actually won an Emmy, since he never meets such a person at work.
