According to this article, Google
is trying to get its advertising business model into radio, television and newspapers.
Huh? Basically, they have done very well in changing the methods of Internet advertising. So now, they want to get into older forms of media?
To me this seems like Henry Ford after popularizing the automobile, started investing in coaches, blacksmith shops, hay and alfalfa farms, etc.
It seems like a giant step backwards doesn’t it?
old people don’t internet
old people have money
I think Gentle Robot nailed it - short and sweet. It’s easy if you think about an older person you know - for example, my father. My father has no idea about half the stuff on the internet, but he loves ebay. Basically, he goes to four or five websites altogether. He does listen to a lot of radio and read two newspapers everyday. I’m sure any website he read about, he’d check out. It’s an easy way to reach those who aren’t internet savvy.
Kind of like how movies and such advertise on the radio. They could advertise only in theaters, but why not do both and get more people to hear the ad, even if some hear it twice.

Not just the old people, but the masses as well. A much higher percentage of people own TVs than own computers. They may be hoping for some shift there.
What is Google’s advertising model? As far as I can tell, it consists of displaying things that purport to have a high level of relevance to your subject of interest, which are in fact totally irrelevant, or worse, completely insubstantial and content-free, or worse still, will only take you to somewhere else you can search and find yet more insubstantial or irrelevant results.
I don’t think I want that on the internet, let alone on TV.
Google ads are created by the person/company writing the ads - and they pick their own keywords.
For instance, if I wanted to plug my Las Vegas website, I would put in keywords like LAS VEGAS and NEVADA and CASINOS…but I could also add SLOTS and BROTHELS and BUFFETS to the list. They have some, but not total, relevance to what is on my site.
Some businesses mistakenly think if they add more keywords (which cause their ad to pop up when you do a search on those words) they will get more business.
I could easily add keywords like HAND PUPPETS, GOATS and DINGLEBERRIES. Those words have nothing to do with what is on my site and will not help me an iota; it will only annoy people who are searching for those items when my site pops up - but many Google advertisers are simply stupid and think this will increase their business. It doesn’t.
annnnd as a sidenote, this thread thus far has produced google ads about… advertising…and getting google ads.
