I ran a search on GOTF on dvdpricesearch.com and the best prices for the two editions are almost the same. For the special edition the best price after shipping and handling is 17.98 which sounds pretty reasonable. The special features, including interviews with the author of the novel and Roger Ebert, also look interesting.
Fox is releasing Totoro this December…it’ll only be a cheapy release as they’re trying to cash into the license at the last minute before the films rights revert back to Disney next year.
I would actually kill for a decent release of Porco Rosso.
I haven’t heard of anybody having problems with Deepdiscountdvd. I usually do all my dvd buying through uln.com, though.
I still remember seeing this movie at an anime club showing when I was an undergrad. It was the last show of the night, and when the lights went up I swear there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Most of the audience…about a hundred people or so, the ones who hadn’t seen the film before, including me…were just stunned. I felt like tearing out my heart with a corkscrew and throwing it at the screen, yelling “HERE, TAKE IT!!!”
I finally saw it. It was everything I expected and a lot more.
What surprised me was how beautiful the film was both visually and emotionally . Of course the relationship between the brother and sister is idealized but it’s so beautifully and convincingly portrayed that it never seems sentimental or manipulative.
The funny thing is I don’t think, ulitimately, the film is sad at all depite its many sad moments . I think its essential message was that the bond between the two children is so pure that it transcends all their worldly suffering.
Being your typical older American guy, I always found “Old Yeller” to be the saddest movie ever made. To this day, despite seeing it several times, it still leaves me sobbing.
If this movie is sadder, I don’t think I could stand to watch it.
My wife and I just borrowed it from a friend. I’m not a fan of Anime andmy friend decided that I needed to see this. My wife and I were devestated by the end of it. What a beautiful sad film. I’ll probably only watch it one more time in my life when my boys get older and start thinking War is cool.
I never thought a cartoon would do that to me.
You think that if we showed this film to world leaders they might be less likely to go to war? (I know idealized thinking)
I don’t know about world leaders but I think this is a film which should be shown to every high-school student in their history class. So if any of you know any school-teachers, tell them about the film.
Incidentally that might be a good reason to buy the DVD; even if you don’t want to see the film too many times it 's a great film to lend out to friends.
Just to let you all know - Grave of the Fireflies DVD (The Collector’s Edition 2 disk set) is selling at Best Buy for $19.99 (in Los Angeles). Very nice set and worth every penny - even more. My husband & I have not watched the movie for about 2 or 3 years - started crying again! Even my husband got sniffly! By far this is the saddest and most poignant picture I have ever seen. Also, the most beautiful. So, now you know where you can pick it up!
Cried uncontrollably for at least five minutes after the credits stopped rolling. I cannot even imagine a movie sadder than this one, and if one does exist, I don’t have any desire to see it.
So nobody thought it was a manipulative and nationalistic movie? It is a powerful anti-war movie but it seems to reinforce the common Japanese view of Japan as a victim of WWII.
“So nobody thought it was a manipulative and nationalistic movie”
Hardly. It doesn’t downplay the cruelty of the Japanese to each other. It doesn’t demonize the Americans or even much bother about them. To be sure it doesn’t mention, say, the Nanking massacre or the Bataan march but the movie isn’t a history lesson about Japanese war policy during the 30’s ad 40’s but a look at two particular children during the last days of the war.
In fact compared to Hollywood movies it is impressive how much the film avoids nationalism and jingoism…
