Yeah, the few cites I came across said that the extra salt will cause them to over drink, which leads to bloat (an especially bad thing for danes). I was just wondering if that was the only thing or if there is some other reason it’s really bad. More so, I’d wonder what the rate of dogs dying from ham would be.
It’s not poisonous but it is very fatty. High fat meals could lead to GI problems or pancreatitis. Pancreatitis could be very serious, even life-threatening. A tiny piece of ham as a treat probably wouldn’t be a big deal* but you don’t want to serve them a big ole’ slab of ham.
*unless you have a schnauzer, those dogs are just pancreatitis waiting to happen. Seriously, don’t even let them look at a high fat meal.
That’s almost always true. Except my current dog (pug). He doesn’t care for ham, sausage, pork chop, or pepperoni. When I’ve given him little bits of those things they end up on the floor uneaten. He’ll eat bacon but doesn’t go crazy when it’s cooking.
Every other dog I’ve ever had went absolutely nuts for bacon, and loved anything else pork.
Funny you should mention schnauzers. Our miniature schnauzer loved eating pork products — ham, bacon, pork chops — but they all made him vomit within minutes of eating them. And always on our living room carpet.
When I was a kid we didn’t feed pork to the dog because we thought parasites were a problem (that we thought we were immune to I guess). This was > 20 years ago, so was no doubt wrong or at least not applicable any more.
My old mutt*, Brownie, would take a piece of pepperoni if offered. But then later I’d find it uneaten in some dark corner. Any other meat product would be much enjoyed.
*A red spaniel, I can’t remember the actual breed name. Doesn’t really matter.
