I’ve read the story of a woman who says she started hanging out (and more) with white supremacists due to her boyfriend. She mentions his transformation as going from an indie-rock-loving man to a fascist. I guess she brings up indie rock for a reason but I don’t really understand what the reason is.
The roots of indie music are in punk, and very much left wing. That has mostly persisted to this day.
I would say indie rock tends to have non-fascist if not anti-fascist lyrical content, although not overtly political. Pro-fascist lyrical content is more prevalent in punk rock, metal, and noise music.
That’s more prevalent, not common, and I’m generalizing, obviously, and speaking as an American.
Indie might be a modern approximation of hippie, to some people.
I’d call indie rock the most inward-looking of all popular music genres, caring mostly about emotions and little about the outside world. As such, it’s mostly non-political, although extreme introspection seems to be more common among liberals.
The indie music I grew up on was both emotional and fiercely political - 80s Britain, most indie bands were fiercely leftist, and the rest had other political concerns (Meat is Murder, anyone?). This may have slipped a bit, but it’s on the rise again
