Beyond the issue of stupidity does this fall afoul of some legal “defacing currency” prohibition?

Not in the UK, apparently, where the pop group K-Foundation burnt one million pounds a few years ago.
This has been addressed several times before and, no, it is not illegal just like you can deform pennies. It is illegal if done with the purpose of cheating but you can burn as much cash as you want and you are doing a great service to your country.
Wrong, it is in the UK, which is why they couldnt get the money back from the ashes when they ended up regretting it. Fools.
Taking currency out of circulation does little to the economy. Very little of our money is ever printed up in the inconvenient form of physical bills and coins. Much, much more exists as entries in electronic ledger books in banks and S&Ls and such, where it can accrue interest.
I think sailor was referring to them providing profit to the U.S. government. It cost just a few cents to make the bill which is then bought at face value by someone who then burns it. The government then will make another bill for a few cents and sell that one at face value.
