… or is there something odd about receiving a “we want money” type phone call from the ACLU – and the caller has a very, very thick Indian accent?
Well, I had to Google what the ACLU even was.
What’s wrong with having an accent?
That a group known for protecting free speech should hire talkers from another continent.
Maybe it is just me. Never mind.
I guess it’s ‘wrong’ if you know that a lot of places are outsourcing call center work to India so he is probably being called by an Indian from India (therefore unlikely to be an employee of the ACLU whatever that is)
But whether ‘wrong’ means wrong is for another thread.
Haven’t you ever heard somebody with a thick Indian accent living in America?
I (1) am female and (2) didn’t say there was anything wrong with it – just “odd” (see OP). Given the quality of the phone connection and the thickness of the gentleman’s accent, I am reasonably sure that the source of the call was the Indian subcontinent.
Is this really surprising to you? Many phone call solicitations these days are actually from India. This applies both to people selling you things and requests for contributions. Even if the voice doesn’t sound like an Indian accent, the call frequently is from India, since many of the people working on phone solicitations from Indian call centers have learned to do a very good American accent.
I am guessing the word of the day here is - ‘ironic’
I honestly don’t see how hiring people from India restricts the free speech of American citizens. “Free speech” surely doesn’t mean “gets first choice at any job that involves speaking”.
No, but you would think the American Civil Liberties Union would hire Americans to do their telephone solicitation.
I don’t see the problem with using Indian call centres like everybody else does. Unless the ACLU has some kind of nationalist bent which makes them keen to emphasise their American-ness. Or does the ACLU also promote things like “buy American” and “jobs for Americans”?
