Sometimes I only wish that I could understand Spanish better than I do now, because the programs on Telemundo, Telefutura, and Univision look so interesting. For example, Sabado Gigante looks interesting, and a game show, called Guerra De Los Sexos looks so appealing to me. I think a lot of stuff on English stations pretty much suck…
Same stuff, different language. Prettier women. I miss Univision. Wish my cable package would pick it up…
My wife is Peruvian, so Univision is on most of the day. Don Francisco on Sabato Gigante is just like the Ed Sullivan of Spanish television. Some of the soap operas get REALLY boring - just like the American ones.
However, a program like “Cero en Conducta” really amazes me. It’s hard to describe. Imagine if you will…a TV program that takes place in a school and the students are all adults dressed as children. The girls wear revealing school girl outfits, the boys wear normal school boy outfits (sized for adults), and the teachers are buffoons. There’s a stereotypical gay character, and a “luche libre” (Mexican wrestler) character. The “plot” of the show revolves around continuous jokes on the teachers and usually a famous (in the latin world) guest star appears - dressed as a child. My understanding is that Cero en Conducta is the one of the highest rated shows in Mexico.
I guess it depends on your perspective. I can’t stand most of Sabado Gigante, and the one segment or two that I can tolerate are not worth the rest of the crap I’d have to endure. Soap operas, or telenovelas, do nothing for me either. The “humor” shows, can’t really call them sitcoms, are as unfunny and corny as the worst of non-Spanish television. The “issue” shows, like Cristina and Padre whatshisname, are just Spanish versions of Jerry Springer.
I guess if you like looking at Latin women in skimpy outfits some of the variety shows will tickle your fancy, but I’m from Florida so that’s pretty much part of the scenery down here.
The one thing I like about the Spanish stations are the news coverage, it is much more regional in scope in that they tend to cover issues in the Americas in great depth, certainly much greater depth then the non-Spanish networks.
Pedro El Escamoso was the best.
For those not in the know, Pedro El Escamoso was a spanish sitcom about a man with a mullet, bad 5 o clock shadow, tight vertical stripped gaudy pants and boots. Best dance and theme song ever. Spanish soaps only last 1 year, but it did so well they gave him another show.
I just watched it for the theme song. No matter what language you speak, just watching it made me crack up every time.
Sabado Gigante is king, though. You have to see El Chacal to believe him.
To me it looks like a load of crap: soap operas, game shows, and dancing women.
I agree. I think it looks like crap, and it’s looked like the exact same crap for the last ten years, at least.
