Is it okay to get a single kitten?

I think that cats do better with at least one other cat around. Two cats, and especially two kittens, will keep each other busy. So you’ll have more litter scooping, but fewer instances of “I got bored and decided to shred your sofa”.

The best toy for a kitten is… another kitten.

Must it be a kitten? Would you be happy with an adult cat? Most shelters or rescue groups have friendly, people-loving adult cats who NEED to be the only cat in the household. That could be the best of both worlds for you. You get a single cat who likes it that way, and you don’t have to worry about crazy kitten destructiveness.

Won’t hear that from me. We have four cats, ages 6, 3, and 1, with the last two being found by the generator when they were about a week old and had to be bottle fed. We have a big enough house so there no territory squabbles and everyone gets along.

And yes, I clean the little box once a day, ever since Mrs. DrumBum was pregnant and used the “expectant mothers are not supposed to clean litter boxes” excuse. :dubious:

We scoop the litterbox…never. We use pure “crystal” cat litter and dump it and put in fresh once a month. Even my cat hating mother can’t smell it, so we’re very happy with that.

Yes its okay. But two can play and make company to each other. If you have the space, is better to have two.
ETA: Talking about cat litters… but that litter robot is no good and can stink really bad if you don’t clean all the pieces regularly. We bought one and is now in the garage and we are back to using regular litter boxes.

Awesome solution: I’m getting one kitten and my best friend is getting my kitten’s sister, so they can still hang out.

They won’t be old enough for us to take for another few weeks though. I can’t wait!

Congrats on the new kitten Blackberry!

And may I recommend the Omega Paw Rollaway Litter Box? I love mine.
If your kitten will be indoor only, it is a very good litterbox and it will allow you to use ordinary cheap clumping litter, the kind that afterwards could enrich your gardens soil (watch out for toxoplasmosis, so don’t do it in your vegetable garden, etcetera).
Or you could get another kind of biodegradable litter (Sawdust pellets? 'But then the omega paw isnt for you) and try to compost it.

Thank you! I’m so excited. I think we’re going to name her Freya.

That litter box is exactly what I have in my cart at Petco.com! I was hoping it would be a good choice. The other one that looked good, this one, was just so expensive for the refills. Plus it doesn’t have a top, and it’s going to be in my daughter’s bathroom so I don’t want her dropping towels and stuff into it.

I’ve had single, double, triple, and a litter of 7 at the same time, and believe me, it doesn’t matter. 1 can be more trouble than 3 and 3 can be less trouble than 7. Cats will grow up psychotic or sane regardless of whether they have companionship or not, it’s a crapshoot. Just about the only consistency I’ve ever noticed is that female cats go into heat while male cats spray to mark their territory. Everything else is purely random. Average cats sleep all day anyway, so don’t worry about them being lonely.

The only reason to get two cats is if you want two cats.

I’ve never had luck with more than one cat. I always end up with “bitchy solo cat” and bitchy solo cat tends to injure her “friend” until bitchy solo cat gets declawed. When bitchy solo cat is just bitchy, but no longer a danger to other cat.

My daughters friends have siblings - and while when kittens they were strongly bonded and played and slept together - at four they couldn’t care less about each other. They don’t cuddle in a pile to sleep or play with each other.

I know you’ve made your decision, but I want to emphasize TWICE THE VET BILLS. And twice the chance kitten will eat something that requires surgery to remove the blockage

I’ve seen this too. Kitten friendships rarely last. Established adult cat friendships however, generally do last for ever. So if you want to get two cats to get along, your best bet is to get two adult cat friends. The shelter can get you such a pair and can also tell you about the personality of the adult cat.

I used to want kittens, but now I feel the uncertaintly about the personality of the cat you will have for fifteen years is :: so :: not worth the five fist months of cute. The only kitten I ever got turned out to be pretty neurotic. I loved him anyway, but give the choice, I’d go with an adult cat.

Whether you get one cat or two, here’s my advice for how to adopt:
Try to find a place with as many cats as possible in a room–but not in cages. This could be a humane society shelter; or it could be an ad on the internet (or a local newspaper) from a family with a house full of cats, or a litter of 6 new kittens.
Go the room, sit down on the floor quietly, and stay calm and patient.
See who comes to visit.
The one(s) who climbs up to your shoulders and stays there is your new kitty-overlord.

I just named my new cat Freya! You have good taste

As do you! I love Freya and it is one of the only names my daughter and I agree on. I really like Lilo too but she won’t go for it.

But, but, but…kittens!

One of my husband’s friends fosters kittens - I think she probably has the ideal situation for someone wanting kittens for cute - she has them from the time they leave Mom until they are old enough to be spayed, at which time they are grabbed up by people wanting KITTENS.

She has two adult cats who put up with this.

I’m no spiderologist, but I think that might be a spider-ettin’ spider. They get a reprieve.
