i recall my friend having a conversation to me about what was on the news the last few decades & what we remembered. (my friend sometimes makes stuff up mind you) she mentioned how in the 80s there was a case of bullying against a boy described as a ‘‘nerd’’. he was harassed a lot, so one day he snapped and according to her, he’d pinned the guy down and wrapped his legs around the neck of the assailent , ''suffocating him very alike to that of a boa constrictor. ‘’
because the story allegedly took place a long time ago, the articles cant be found online…apparently the story was so bizzare it was almost unbelievable, but as i said she makes stuff up sometimes…so leading up to the question.
Trivially. In Judo strangles (shime-wasa) are an important component of the art, and strangles done with the legs such as sankaku-jime very very effective.
More importantly the power that can be generated by ones legs is immense, and can cause severe injury as well. One move is a scissor lock (Do-jime). Lock the ankles and straighten the legs. In Judo this is an illegal move, and will result in disqualification. It is possible to rupture organs in an opponent with this.
Judo has a lot of moves that can pin an opponent down, and optionally strangle them. If someone is reasonably skilled with the moves they can often overcome a much stronger person who does not know what is going on.
judging by what my friend said the guy had his thighs both pressing against the front and back of the other person’s neck. you’ve also got to factor in that it takes roughly 5 minutes to strangle someone in this way (just cutting off air) and that the guy mustve been struggling or prying at the dudes legs.
Hereis a video of three triangle chokes with the legs in MMA. It is pretty easy to choke someone out with your legs if you have them in the right position. They will not be fighting very long since the the lack of blood flow will cause the victim to pass out pretty quickly. Killing the person once they are passed out would not take five minutes either.
However, I disbelieve the story since it is unlikely for a nerd to be able to pin someone down and get them in a leglock unless they were really lucky or the person they were doing it to was just as weak. If you knew where this supposedly took place you could do a search of the archives of the local newspaper and find out if it is true.
the nerd didnt use a triangle choke but a ‘‘Scissor’’-move, with the legs pressing the front and back of the throat, compressing the windpipe but not the blood flow which is why it took 5 minutes. thanks for input
Well, once you get him to pass out (which usually is like a minute or two, isn’t it?, probably a bit less since he’s struggling), completing the suffocation shouldn’t be too difficult. Mind you, I think important information is missing from the story, and I’m not sure how you can be sure of the position of this thighs relative to his neck with such hazy details, but it wouldn’t be five minutes of struggling or prying in either case.
i looked something up. most untrained people can do about 70-100 lbs (single rep) average on the leg adduct machine (where the work out is to strengthen the adductors by squeezing the legs laterially). the question is if that force is sufficient to withstand prying and to be able to squeeze that hard for about 3 minutes (until the victim passes out from lack of air) in a person i describe.
Oh, well, that didn’t last long. At any rate, I’m still curious about this three minutes number that was pulled out. Is it even remotely possible for the average person to last that long without losing consciousness while struggling? I mean, I can hold my breath for about two minutes (or at last used to, I haven’t tried lately), but that’s after relaxing myself and filling my lungs completely full of air. In a fight, I’m certainly not relaxed, and it is doubtful that I would have a completely aired-fill set of lungs. I would imagine something like 30-60 seconds, with the struggle progressively getting weaker.
Interesting. When I saw this thread, my first thought was that there’s some guy on Yahoo Answers who posts almost this exact question (although usually with “nerd” instead of “skinny guy”) incessantly - like dozens, if not hundreds of times. I will never understand why people do that.
Ho hum, I don’t bother with other Q&A forums, so had no idea about the incessant asking of this question. I assume this was the same guy.
Anyway, just to assuage any remaining questions. In judo at least - strangling isn’t about cutting off air supply - in fact that is a choke and is technically illegal. That isn’t nearly as effective anyway. A proper strangle is directed at the carotid artery, and pressure here can lead to very rapid loss of consciousness. Techniques to avoid being strangled rely upon realising the technique is in the process of being performed - and doing something about it early. Minimally getting a hand or arm in the way. But if you allow the technique to be applied, you can forget about trying to pry your attacker away. You will pass out well before. If the technique is applied by someone who really knows what they are doing you only have seconds.
I have no credentials on this topic except for experience.
I wrestled in high school and on the way to the water bubbler for a break a team mate thought it would be hilarious to choke me out from behind. I had no idea it was coming. He simply slipped his arm around my neck, from behind, and locked it against his other arm. I had no idea it was coming, again, and I am terribly fearful of not being able to breathe, so I tried my best to kick his balls and punch his face. I get a brush against the face, but that was all. Within 15 seconds I was starting to fade.
There isn’t a single doubt in my mind that a healthy teenage boy (even scrawny, child-like, even) could choke someone out using their legs, assuming they get the proper position.
It should be noted that choking out is different than strangling. A properly executed Police trained choke hold does not attempt to cut off the supply of oxygen, but rather to constrict the blood flow to the brain. You are attempting to temporarily cut off the flow of blood via the neck. As evidenced by the LAPD, this can go from passed out to dead pretty easily.
This produces a passed out person in short order and while I have not seen it, I am told that the victim sometimes performs a goofy flailing leading to the act being called a chicken choke.
Just for the fight against ignorance, a triangle is not a leg lock, a leg lock is attacking someone else’s legs, not attacking someone with your own.
Edit: to answer the OP it is completely plausible, but highly likely the reporter got the story wrong and it was a blood choke held too long on the sides off the neck, than an air choke. Maybe started air choke for a few minutes and then became a blood choke
