Is it possible to clone a mummy?

I was reading this article here about mummies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummy#Scientific_study_of_Egyptian_mummies and it mentioned “molecular cloning” of their DNA, apparently to simply obtain samples that are easier to study.

So my question is, would it be possible to make an actual human clone from mummy DNA? Or would time render it too degraded for that (ignoring the other difficulties in creating a human clone)?

I’m aware of the obvious legal and ethical issues here and am certainly not an advocate of creating clones out of random dead people who have not given their consent…After reading that sentence and after reading about the debates regarding King Tut’s appearance, I began imagining some mad scientist coming up with the idea of cloning him to solve the debate once and for all.

You could, theoretically at least, if you got a complete DNA sequence. I don’t recall offhand the quality of DNA that’s been recovered from mummies, but I suspect that you could probably get pretty close if you looked hard enough. That is, if chromosome 2 is degraded badly in one cell, you might be able to find it in another (oversimplified). It hopefully goes without saying that this is theoretical because we don’t have the technology to do it yet.
