Is it possible to 'feel' your brain?

During a Meyers-Briggs type seminar (search) we got into a discussion about all of our personal quirks and things that we can do, comparing and contrasting with eachother.

I mentioned that I can ‘feel’ my right and left brain independently, and it is a sensation different then when I ‘feel’ my scalp. Note that I am talking about bringing awareness and just ‘feeling’ if you get my drift?

So my question is, is this a documented phenomenon or am I crazy? A couple other people in the class claimed that they could do it also but most people said they couldn’t. Note that my personality type, ISTP is supposed to be the most self aware.

Thanks in advance! =)

If there’s anyone out there who can’t distinctly feel any chosen area of their brain, then we simply are not the same species.

“With INFJs, ranked first among all the types in using spiritual/philosophical coping resources.” - http://www.discoveryourpersonality.com/istp.html

This my be a question related to “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” Can you actually feel what you say you do, or is it a coping mechanism? In any case, they seem to be feeding off each other.

On a more serious note, my research indicates that the brain does not have sensory nerves, just thinking nerves. Therefore the sensation must just be “in your head”… so make of that what you will.

There is somatotopic mapping for ‘Head’, but I doubt that refers to the brain.

Phage when I said self aware I meant a physical self awareness not spirituality…also the web site that you referenced is not legit. You cannot take the Meyers-Briggs online, it is copyrighted! It has to be administered by a licensed professional.

It may well be ‘in my head’ but I will swear up and down right now that I feel ‘something’ going on…any, even random crazy ideas, are welcome! =)

You definitley don’t have any nerves of sensation in your brain. IANAD (I just hang out with lots of med students), so I don’t know what it is you’re feeling, but I doubt that it’s the hemispheres of your brain.

My guess would be that its a placebo effect, of sorts (probably not the right term). Remember, everything you experience is subjective in a sense…in that everything we are consciously aware of is a creation of our brain, as opposed to a literal interpretation of the world. Getting to my point, your brain is probably producing outputs X and Y which your conscious interpretation, based on your entire life experience, has decided should “feel” like the left and right side of your brain. Other people would interpret X and Y completely differently.

Anyway, IANAP. That’s just my theory.
