Well is it? I’ve heard Dopers joke about “eargasms”, but is it possible for people to have orgasms in areas other than the genitals?

I’m not sure exactly what you mean. Are you asking if an orgasm can be acheived through stimulation of non-genital body parts?
As I understand it, you’re asking if there are sensations that you can experience in body parts other than your genitalia which are intensely pleasurable.
The eargasm comes to mind, but that’s the only one I know of.

What I mean is, an orgasm occurs in the genitalia. I’m wonder if one could occur in another location-the sensation would be felt in, say, the shoulder?

Actually, an orgasm occurs in the brain. Most of the wiring which triggers orgasm is found in the genitals, but all sensory input from any site can theoretically contribute to orgasm.
Personally, I doubt it. As I understand it, the genitalia have a rather specialized nerve structure, and I don’t believe that anything like that is found anywhere else.
As for the eargasm, the best explanation I’ve heard is that the nerves in the ear are rather sensitive due to chronic understimulation. Seems unlikely that one’s shoulder would suffer from the same condition.
But I’m not a doctor, or even a physiologist.
Cecil discussed the ability to orgasm without genital stimulation, but it sounds to me like the sensation, if not the stimulation, was genital. Can some people have orgasms without genital stimulation?
I’ve always found that a good stretch of tired muscles can be immensely pleasurable. I also love having my scalp massaged; when I get my hair cut I just sit there and let my eyes glaze over (it’s hugely pleasant, but entirely non-sexual) - my children are the same; they would sit and let me brush their hair until it was all worn away.
I often turn turn the heat way up on the shower and direct the stream to certain parts of my body. First the out side of my elbows, then the inside of my thighs and finally the back of my legs. Upon initiation of the hot stream at any particular area, I feel a crescendo of pleasure until the pain becomes unbearable or the sensation muted by aclimatization.
Another sensation similar in nature the eargasm is when some one grips the muscle just above the knee cap and squeezes. This is pleasurable in the vicinity, often excruciatingly so, and often results in genital arousal.
As I remember, Madonna has claimed to be able to produce an orgasm (in herself) simply by inserting a finger into her navel.
Make of that what you will, I’m going to go ream out the inside of my skull in shame for even remembering a bit a trivia like that.

Can somebody fill me in (as it were) on the phenomenon of ‘eargasm’ - a Google search wasn’t very helpful.
Gee Mangetout, have you never had someone gently chew on your ear and swirl their tongue deep into your earhole? You just haven’t lived. 
So is the theory that the pleasurable feeling associated with an orgasm not a result of engorgement of the genital area with blood and then the sudden release of same? Do I just remember this from reading something?
If I’m right, then you would only produce this feeling in an area that was engorged with blood with a following release. The nerve impulses would, of course, be sent to your brain telling you that you just came. But the area affected would be the genitals?
I have hear tell that people who have suffered severe nerve damage, rendering them wheel-chair bound can have orgasms in unusual places like the ears of nipples.
An acquaintence of mine apparently gets orgasms from her feet. She’s a nice enough lady, but everyone who meets her is warned beforehand to not let her talk them into giving her a foot massage. (Unless they want to give her an orgasm, that is.)
Weird. I have never seen her get a foot massage, but this is what I’ve been told, on many occasions.

The ears of nipples would be a fine place indeed to have an orgasm. Actually, I read in that book “Our Bodies, Our Something, Our Whatever” or whatever it’s called, that people in wheelchairs “learn” to have orgasms in other places. One woman they interviewed said she experienced such pleasure at the backs of her knees. This was from full body stimulation.
Wouldn’t the latter be a bit dirty, with earwax and all. ::gross::
