Is it possible to never dream?

I can’t remember a single instance of myself dreaming,so is it possible I don’t?

I suppose it might be possible, but what is much, much more likely is that you just don’t remember them. Something you might try is to have someone watch you while you’re sleeping and wake you up a few minutes after they observe REM sleep begin (they can see your eyes fluttering beneath your lids). You’ll probably remember what you were dreaming about, even if you forget again a few minutes later.

–Cliffy

I back Cliffy’s hypothesis. My ex claims to never dream or have dreamed (or “dreamt”, for you all in the UK), but many was the time that I’d see her asleep and making little noises, movements, etc.; obviously dreaming. I therefore think it’s more a question of remembering dreaming, rather than not actually dreaming at all.

I know my Dog dreams. I am not sure about my cat, but I believe so.

Data_Slave, do you wake up naturally, or to an alarm every day? The shock of being awoken by an alarm can make you forget your dreams since in order to remember them you have to think of them when you first wake up or you probably won’t remember them later. I hope you do dream, because it makes me sad to think that there are people who don’t.

At least according to my college psychology book and professor. That was a few years ago. I could find the book and give you a cite if you really want one.

In a study, subjects were awoken when they entered REM sleep. They got a full nights sleep, but had no dreams. When they were finally allowed to sleep normally, the subjects experienced the normal amount of REM, plus time for the nights that they'd missed.

elf-I wake up naturally,no alarm clock for me.

I should mention that i have a very strange circadian cycle,i sleep for at the most five hours a day,not always consecutive and not always at the same times.
I have also asked people whether i moved or talked during sleep and they have commented on how still i am but thats it.

So the hard scientific answer is that i’m just not remerbering them i guess.

dreams are necessary. a study was once done on rats, i think. in any case, they were woken up whenever they went into rem sleep (when dreams occur) and even though they slept enough, they eventually died of exhaustion. i read it in my college psychology book, so it must be true

Dreams are very important, as we all learned from that one episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

What was the ep’s name:smack: think DocCathode- Tiken’s rift, one moon circles, eyes eyes in the dark.

Anyhoo…

The hallucinations etc experienced by the Enterprise crew(except Data and Troi) are rather mild compared to reality. Denied rem sleep, humans begin dreaming while awake.

I’m sure a few Dopers have experienced this when pulling an allnighter before final exams.
