Is it possible to set up Pine (email client) for Hotmail?

I’m fed up with the slowness and general unreliability of Hotmail web access. Sometimes, clicking on stuff plain doesn’t work, even if you are using a recent version of Internet Explorer. Years ago, I used Pine as as client both on a Unixlike system as well as on Windows. Is it possible in any meaningful sense to get Pine hooked up to Hotmail, especially using either IMAP or POP?

Doubtful.
Hotmail (at least the free version) doesn’t have a POP interface. There used to be a plug-in for Mac Mail (httpmail) that allowed Hotmail access, but I don’t think even that is available anymore. The paid Hotmail has POP access, I believe.

ETA: Looks like httpmail is still around, and now supports other clients - it might be worth a try: http://httpmail.sourceforge.net/

I’m pretty sure that the free version of Hotmail supports both POP3 and SMTP access; I have set things up so that my Hotmail email turns up in my GMail inbox via POP3, and I’m absolutely certain I don’t have the paid version of Hotmail.

Looks like they added POP3 access a few years ago. I gave up on Hotmail ages ago, so i never bothered to check if they finally got around to it. Took 'em long enough.

Aside from lacking an archive option, they’ve brought hotmail largely up to par with gmail lately. And the ability to use “@live.com” with it means it doesn’t even quite have that “@hotmail” stink on it.

I still don’t use it much, but they’ve definitely made improvements.

Do you have access to a terminal-only Internet connection or something? I haven’t seen those in ages.
