Is it safe to come out now?

Forgive the tongue-in-cheek title, but somehow “Is it over?” sounded a little…foreboding.

But, IYHO, was today’s attack the first and last we’ll hear from the terrorists for a while, or is there more to come?

Personally, though I’m still in shock over today’s tragedies, it doesn’t seem to make strategic sense from the terrorists’ POV to stop attacking now, not if they want to build upon the horror they started today.

Oh, fuck, I hope it’s over…

I have to admit that I am wondering the same thing. What will happen next? Will there be terrorist bombings in major cities around the country? Will more planes be hijacked once air traffic is allowed back in the air?

I can’t help but wonder.

Yeah, I’m definitely concerned about attacks in the near future. I think that if they’re going to happen, they’ll happen towards the end of this week, allowing Americans to start thinking that nothing more is coming. I really hope that I’m wrong, though.

I was giving this subject more thought today, over lunch. These are the same guys that have a history of walking into fast food restaurants, strapped to bombs, and then detonating them, right?

shudders The NYSE has metal detectors and really thick doors, right? ::knocks on wood::

Actually, this is the scariest part. Whoever it was could have also put car bombs around the US and/or Europe to go off at the same time. It looks unlikely that a repeat of the hijack scenario would work again as the second time around the passengers will fight back since they know what the alternative is.

Maybe you want the second wave to come in a few days to really shock people. Or you have a delay in phase two just so that you don’t catch a car bomb before having a chance to do the hijackings.

I think that there is a very real threat lurking out there, and it’s up to everyone to be extremely viligent.

At the risk of sounding depressing, I’m just waiting for news of the nuclear device going off in Los Angeles or London.

Bin Laden (if it was him) must have known that the US would come into Afghanistan after him after such a huge attack.

So he must have some contingency plan. Remember he’s spent months or even years planning this attack. I fear that this attack was just the declaration of war, he could have more tricks up his sleeve yet.

And anyway we dont even know for sure it was him. I know it seems likely but what happens if we go into Afghanistan and get him and then it keeps happening? Who do we attack then?

But extra vigilance on the part of all civilians will eventually make it impossible for terrorists to operate on any kind of large scale as it has in most of Europe.

I think Americans need to take a lesson from this - that they are not immune from the world’s problems. Modern terrorists will want to strike at America because America is the richest country and therefore is behind many of the causes which the terrorists object to (rightly or wrongly).

America is going to have to be alert to possible terrorist attacks from now on.

But terrorists can’t actually win the war. All they can do is piss us off from time to time until eventually one of the following three options happens:

  1. A political settlement is reached resolving any disagreements

or

  1. We all learn to live with a minor level of terrorism (since disgruntled people will always exist) but security precautions make major events such as Tuesday unlikely

or

  1. We kill them all so there are no terrorists to disagree with

I think we need to be considering 1. or 2. as the most likely outcomes.

Even if it was him, do you honestly think that other terrorist groups, especially Osama’s own croonies, are going to just let us take him without incident? Even if Afghanistan says, “Yes, here, take him”, do you really believe that his little organization is going to just leave us alone?

I’m glad I’m not the only one worried about what is yet to come. Did anyone see that 60 Minutes around 2 years ago about the “nuclear suitcases” that are missing from the former Soviet Union? I didn’t believe any of it until the end of the story when a CIA spokesman said “it is a very real possibility that these suitcases exist.”

I just watched a story about Bin Ladin on PBS and he blames the US for the “puppet regime” in Saudi Arabia where US troops are defiling the holy land and exploiting the people and stealing oil and for the missle attacks by Clinton, especially the one that blew up a pharmaceutical plant.

I have a bad feeling about the future and maybe the US and allies will have to do some drastic damage and hurt many innocent people in order to actually save the world as we know it.

I think it’s probably just as safe to be openly homosexual now as it ever was.

Sorry, I had to. More seriously, I don’t think anyone knows for sure, and I’ll bet everyone is worried about the prospect of a second wave of attacks. I’m sure this is just what the terrorists wanted. But whether they actually have the resources to pull anything else off, or if they’d be able to manage it with the nation on high alert, is anyone’s guess.
